DIJON CENTRAL HOTELS ON A BUDGET
Old Town Centre
Ville Dijon by TGV Rail
When I’m traveling by train in Europe, high speed or otherwise, finding a good hotel at a value price within walking distance from a rail station is always a consideration. Dijon is the historic capital of Burgundy (Bourgogne), France, the "City of Bell Towers", the heart of France Cote d’Or wine region and a main stop on the TGV high speed rail line. Dijon makes for a must visit on a France rail tour, either on its own or a stopover between the French Riveira and Paris. Dijon is a starting point for touring the Burgundy wine region, rent a car at the station and head south along the Route Grand Crus (see Chateau Marsannay) or a short train ride to Beune (see Old Virgins of Beune). Dijon is about an hour and a half from Paris on the TGV high speed train and 3 hours from Nice. The high speed TGV connection through Strasbourg from Germany which just set the world speed record on its trial run in 2007 (see Europe's High Speed Trains).
The Quality Hotel du Nord located at the Place Darcy in Dijon, directly opposite the Dijon Victory Arch which marks the boundary of the historic old town Centre Ville. 27 modern updated rooms in bright colors with views of the Darcy square. A recognized quality old world Restaurant de la Porte Guillaume and bar with its own wine cellar of the local Burgundy region wines. The hotel has parking and is a 5 minute walk from the Dijon SNCF Gare main train station for the TGV, local trains and car rental agencies. It is also close to the University of Burgundy and the Mustard Museum.
A two blocks further in the heart of the Dijon Village center is the Hotel Ibis Dijon Central on the Rue de la Poste at the Place Grangier. A tourist and business hotel the Ibis Centre Ville is directly across the square from the beautiful old Dijon central Post Office. The Notre Dame de Dijon Cathedral is just down the narrow pedestrian street with its gargoyle façade and the ancient buildings of medieval Dijon, the Palace of the Dukes of Bourgogne and the Les Halles indoor town market with it’s stalls of vegetables, cheeses and famous Dijon mustards open during the week all within a lazy stroll from the front door. On a evening walk check out a little bar tavern the Jacquemart Brasserie, named for the family who adorns the cathedral bell tower located just in front of the Notre Dame cathedral (see DIJON - Wine, Mustard N' Gargoyles), for a bit of local chat and a drink while being stared at by the Cathedral Gargoyles.
There are several sidewalk
restaurants around the Place Darcy, some connected with other hotels,
the Hotel-Restaurant Campanile
Dijon Centre is a larger tourist stop with 81 rooms.
And the Kyriad
Hotel Dijon Centre is the closest to the Dijon Gare train
station, so close they use the train station parking lot and advertise
rates as low as 55 euro.
If
you’re in the mood for a hotel in Dijon a little more
upscale in style and price but close to the TGV for the rail pass
holder traveling first class, the Sofitel Dijon La Cloche the
is also found on the Place Darcy. A Grand Hotel from the 19th Century,

Cloche is an Accor Hotel available with a lowest price guarantee
