PARIS HOTELS a l’OPERA
Literary Inspired Accomodations in Heart of Paris
Ah,
Paris. La Grand Dame of European travel destinations. How to see it all
and where to stay. What’s an arrondisement anyway? How do I get
from Charles DeGaulle Roissy Airport to the center of Paris? Or what
if I take
the Eurostar to Gare Nord? A simple answer, get a hotel in Opera Garnier
area. The cheapest easiest way to get into Paris from CDG is the Roissy
Bus which stops at all the terminals and drops off across the street from
the grand Opera building right in the heart of Paris. Nearby you'll find
shopping at Galleries Layfayette and Place Vendome and easily within
walking distance to
the Louvre, the
Seine River, Petit Palais, even the Invalides and Eiffel Tower with a good
pair of shoes and sturdy legs. There are a range of good location budget
easy value and mid-priced 3 star hotels, yet with a certain amount
of style and history
in the triangle
formed by the Rue de L’Opera, Boulevard Haussmann and Rue de la Louvre.
From the Gare Nord terminus of the Eurostar and Thalys you may prefer to
take a €10 taxi ride from the station. The RER underground at Opera
or a number of other Metro stops can take you anywhere else in Paris, even
a direct connection to Euro Disney.
Hotel Louvre Marsollier Opera
If you look through a Paris Guidebook you’ll likely discover that great English Satirist playwright Oscar Wilde seemed to have spent time at several hotels in Paris in the 1890’s. As his fortunes waxed and waned, Mr. Wilde seemed to have troubles with his hotel bills, so he took lodging at more than one location. The Hotel Louvre Marsollier Opera is one such establishment where the author stayed for a period in 1899 and it makes for a pleasant and convenient stop for a few nights in Paris today.
The
Hotel Marsollier Opera is located on a street so short its name Rue de
Marsollier doesn’t
appear on many guide maps of Paris, a small circular street just off the
Rue de Petit Champs
named
for a minor historical figure. But a very convenient location once found
and the street is quiet with little traffic. The rooms are pleasant and
functional. The
staff
is
very friendly
and helpful, although the tiny elevator is made for extremely cozy conversation.
Americans are very common here as it seems to come up online. There is
a comedy theater across the street, several restaurants nearby and "La
Belle Epoque" Moulin Rogue style Paris "revue" around the
corner. Right across the way is also one of the Paris' best bargain shopping
secrets, the Le Passage Choiseul where you can find that Paris handbag
for €40
what costs several hundred or even thousands over on the Champs Elysee.

Hotel Moliere
This hotel named for the most famous of French playwright is perhaps a little easier to find. Moliere the author, born one Jean-Babtiste Poquelin who’s great plays of “Tartuffe” and “The Misanthrope” has had a street named after him. The Rue de Moliere can be identified by the statue where the Rue de Moliere intersects the Rue de Richelieu just off the Rue de l’Opera. M. Moliere's namesake hotel has rather more to do with its location than a historical connection, but many statues and stylish decorations evoke the spirit of the author and his 17th Century époque. The lobby and lounge are plush and stylish and the rooms of good size for Paris older buildings and elegantly decorated, though the rooms can vary in size and quality.

Etats Unis Opera Hotel
Although
not named for a comedic literary figure, but rather a country (United States
for the French unfamiliar), the Hotel Etats Unis Opera is notable for one of
the most charming hotel bars in the area, the Buckingham Bar evoking rather
an English gentleman’s club with rich woods, specialty cocktails
and entertaining painted portraits of modern political figures in historic
period costumes, such as George Bush as Cardinal Richelieu and Vladimir
Putin as Machiavelli (someone has a sense
of humor the literary satirists would appreciate). The
large lobby and bar are good for meeting other friends and some of the
rooms are connecting
with
a private
entrance,
