BERLIN ACTIVE TOURING
Bicycle Tours and Sight-Jogging
We live busy lives. Time is a premium. We like to keep active, even while on vacation or business. While traveling on a business trip we want to see a bit of the city were in, be it capital or small town. Berlin, the vibrant key city of Germany has lots to see, and for those multi-tasking travelers a new way of seeing it is growing in popularity, “Sight-Jogging”. Sight-seeing tours of Berlin in running shoes and designer sweats are all the rage, especially popular among business travelers with a few spare hours, looking to combine a workout and a bit of touring. Though, if running past the glass domed Reichstag is not for you, a tour by bicycle might be just the thing to get the blood pumping and the pounds dropping. Both “Sight Jogging” and Bicycling Tours provide a fun, active and environmentally friendly way to see Germany’s most exciting city and explore Berlin’s off the beaten path side streets, traditional courtyards, and city squares too small for tour busses. Two-thousand public parks, a hundred miles of waterways and well over a thousand bridges, along with its tree lined boulevards, give Berlin the reputation of being a "green" city and perhaps best explored by bike or foot.
Sightjogging
guides can meet guests at their hotels or conference venues, and guide
them on a moderate
three
to five mile city run, while sharing
information and stories about the sights along the way. Currently available
are three different routes covering “Classical Berlin," "Political
Berlin," and “Berlin of the 1930s and the Wall." Tours
are conducted in both English and German, from 6 am until 8 pm. Visitors
can book at Sightjogging or
by calling 49(0)3 7978 9854. Those
who prefer self-guided running tours can find a wide choice of scenic
jogging routes, including maps and terrain descriptions at Laufstrecken.
Berlin is a popular biking city, among those who live in its massive
sprawl and visitors. Ten percent of all trips taken in Berlin now are
by bicycle. Visitors have discovered bicycling as a perfect way to
experience the city at their own pace. The city is very bike-friendly,
with now
inconvenient hills and offers some 745 miles of clearly marked bike
paths. Major landmarks can be quite spread-out, and can be reached
more easily
on bicycle than by foot, and bike can also be taken on the subway.
Many guided bicycle tours are offered in English with a choice of tours covering both main attractions and special areas of interest. Fahrradstation (www.fahrradstation.de) offers not only a daily highlights tour in English, but also special excursions spotlighting “Berlin and its Immigrants," and “City of the Cold War." Berlin on Bike includes a “Night-Seeing“ tour of illuminated buildings, riverways, and the city’s nightlife, as well as a four-hour tour along the path of the Berlin Wall, and a tour of “Gay Berlin". Fat Tire Bike Tours offers native English-speaking guides and some of the most comfortable bicycles in town. Their basic program includes a daily five-hour “Berlin Highlights” tour and a special “Wall Tour."
Those cycling enthusiasts of an independent spirit can rent bikes for around 10 Euro per day for self-guided touring. Many of the city’s numerous bicycle renting points are located in the trendy "Mitte" center district or near the Friedrichstrasse or Am Zoo bahnhof stations. Local biking maps outlining the bicycle paths can be found in most book stores. The online bicycle router shows recommended bicycle routes between any two points in the city. © Bargain Travel Europe
