PLATZL HOTEL MUNICH
Bavarian Traditional Luxury in Old Town Center
Around
the corner from the famous Bavarian icon the Hofbräu Haus
and a block from the elegant luxury shopping of Maximillian Strass,
the Platzl Hotel is a stylish gem in the heart of Munich’s Altstadt “Old
Town” where the old world meets the new. The Platzl Hotel has
been run by the same family which owns the Ayinger Brewery and since
reconstruction
from a former folklore theater after the war, the Platzl Hotel has
been run with an eye to maintaining a connection to the traditions of
Bavarian style while providing the modern and current lifestyle of 4
star superior accommodation.
The
Platzl’s
location is ideal for touring the old world tourist center of Munich.
The Rathaus
with its famed Glockenspiel on Marienplatz,
the Viktualienmarkt, the Bavarian State Opera House, the Royal Residenz
and the Hofbrauhaus are all within a few blocks walking. The Ubahn
underground station at Marienplatz or Odeonsplatz are within easy reach
for getting about to the rest of Munich, up to the sidewalks of bustling
Schwabing, or to the Convention Center Messe for business trips.
On
the fifth floor one of the more unique features of the Platzl and its
connection between the modern
and Bavarian
past is the wellness center
spa, patterned on the “Moorish Kiosk” of King Ludwig II (“Mad
Ludwig”) who adorned one of his famous castles (see Schloss
Linderhof)
with a lavish spa of tiles and art brought back from the near east. The
spa with foot baths, aroma steam and sauna is a curious and relaxing
throwback to the grand luxury of royal Bavaria. The wellness area is
included in the room rate along with breakfast.
Located
under the vaults which have survived since 1573, the hotel’s
Pfistermuehle Restaurant offers elegant dining in an old world setting
offering upcale Bavarian cuisine with a modern flair and
an extensive international wine celler. The restaurant, of course,
serves
Ayinger
beer from the family brewery. And
for traditional, but less formal, Bavarian Wirtshaus
eating and
drinking beer hall and beer garden, the Wirtzhaus
Ayinger am
Platzl also owned by the family is across the street and a intimate bar
is located in the lobby off of the dark wood paneled lobby
reception lounge. If you're in town for Oktoberfest or just feeling in
the Old Bavarian mood, there is even a traditional Bavaria clothing
(Drindl and Lederhosen) shop downstairs. The street side rooms can get
a little noisy on weekend nights if you leave the windows open when the
Hofbrauhaus and tourist shopping is at its most boisterous.
The
room prices are reasonable for a 4 Star Superior accommodation
starting around €120 for a
single and €175 for a double. For convenience
the reception desk provides a monitor with flight
arrivals
and departures from Munich’s International Airport.
The Platzl Hotel is easy to get to from the main rail station Hauptbahnhof,
just
take the Ubahn to Marienplatz. From the airport, if you don’t want
to pay for an expensive taxi ride, take the train or a bus to the rail
station (see Munich
Airport). The Platzl has an underground garage for arriving
by car, but getting to it requires navigating some narrow streets in
the maze of
the old town, reached either from a turn off Maximilianstr or from the
east
Isartor gate. Garage parking is €20 for 24 hours.
