LAKELAND MOTOR MUSEUM - CUMBRIA ENGLAND
British Motoring and Speed Records in the Lake District

British classic car enthusiast museum northern England photoThe one impression of driving the roads of North England’s Cumbria lake region is the narrowness of the winding country lanes, often lined with stone fences allowing small margin for error with your fellow road travelers barreling the opposite way, perhaps the essence of British motoring. And a visit to the Lakeland Motor Museum in lower Cumbria takes you back on a nostalgic trip to England’s automobile past.

Messerschmitt car photoOnce a private collection, the Lakeland Motor Museum is located on the grounds a Holker Hall, a Victorian Manor House renowned for its grand scale house and gardens. The car museum collection is an eclectic MG police sports model photorange from Enfield motorcycles, rare 1923 Raleigh, British classic Healys, Triumphs, Jaguars, German Messerschmitt tri-wheelers, Italian Alfas, a curious MG sports car designed as a police interceptor. Portions of the display are presented in a complete original 1930’s motoring garage.

Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird speed record car replica photoPerhaps most unique about the collection are the examples from the career of British world speed competitors Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald Campbell and their famed “Bluebird” boats and cars in the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition. Campbell Speed Record Boat K4 photoDonald Campbell was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in a BBC film “Across the Lake”. The replica Bluebird hydroplane boat used in the film is here, along with a replica of the 1935 Bonneville speed record setting Bluebird car and jet boats from Donald Campbell’s 7 world water speed records until his death in 1967. The exhibition also uses scale models, photographs and video to detail the lives, successes and failures of these famous British national heroes.

The Lakeland Motor Museum may not be a tourist destination to plan all on its own, but for car enthusiasts driving the winding backroads of Cumbria's Lake District, it’s well worth a detour into Britain’s motoring past. © Bargain Travel Europe
