Lake

destination of the Lake District of Cumbria in Northern England. The
lake is known for its cruise boats and summer water activities. Halfway
up the eastern shore is the town of Bowness-on-Windermere, perhaps tourist
center of the Lake District. The Windermere Cruises boats depart from
its harbor as to the ferry boats which cross to the western shore and
both north and south ends of the lake. The Lake District’s most
famed resident and benefactor, Beatrix Potter creator of “Peter
Rabbit” and other woodland creature brought to life provide much
of the area’s attraction.

A former Victorian era mansion turned elegant country hotel, the Old England is furnished with antiques and offers panoramic views of the lake and the green hill “fells” from its Terrace Bar and cozy candlelit restaurant. On most Saturdays, the hotel pianist adds to the old English gentry ambience. The hotel has its own lake jetties approached through garden paths and provides a quiet respite from the bustle of the well-trod tourist activity of Bowness. The hotel ass classic rooms in the main older hotel and lake view rooms in a newer wing. Large romantic lake view rooms with four poster beds with spectacular lake views and suites are also available, but reserve well in advance in high season.
The location in Bowness-on-Windermere is within easy reach of most of the Lake District’s attractions. For children the “World of Beatrix Potter” a themed book land featuring dioramas of scenes and well-known characters of the author’s works are a few blocks walk. Lakeland tours and Windermere lake cruise boats are steps away (see Cruises on Lake Windermere).
