CHATEAU DE POMMARD
Wine Chateau on the Route des Grand Vins Bourgogne
The
largest private vineyard in modern Burgundy, the Chateau de Pommand
dates back to 1726. In France, there
are chateaux to visit, some to stay
in and some with a history of wine making, and Chateau de Pommand is
one of the latter. Located just south of the Burgundy region historic
town of Beaune (see Beaune) along the Road of the Great Wines, the winery
is one of the oldest in Burgundy making wines since the 1700’s,
but the chateau and its vineyards have passed through many hands in its
history.
The
original chateau was built by Vivant de Micault a secretary to King
Louis XVI as the Chateau Micault. The
estate was bought and the chateau
sold in anticipation of the coming revolution. Later Napoleon kept a
room at the chateau, a friend of the family and lover of its wines. In
1855 the Clos du Château de Pommard was one of the first listed
among the "Premières Cuvées". The current winery
and estate was acquired in 2003 by winemaster Maurice
Giraud.
The winery prides itself on its Pinot Noir grapes known as the “ruby of the Cote d’Or”. The wines of Chateau Pommard have been served on fine French dining tables since the late 17th Century. The signature bottle of the chateau’s label is based on a unique hand-blown design from the pre-revolution. The chateau itself is far from a grand castle of one’s imagination of a Burgundy chateau originally more a nobleman’s farm house on the agricultural estate.so the focus of a visit here is mostly for the wine. For a more castle variety of chateau near Beaune see Châteauneuf-en-Auxois a few kilometers away. For a bit of movie trivia, it is bottles of Chateau Pommard wine where Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant discover the hidden MacGuffin in Alfred Hitchcock's "Notorious".
A
visit to Chateau de Pommard takes you into the vaulted 300 year old
wine cellars with hundreds of oak aging
barrels and almost 400,000 bottles,
some of which have been aging for almost 50 years. Then a visit to the
small “Wines and Vines” Museum with chateau vineyard and
regional wine making history and a wine press dating from the 17th Century.
The house artwork includes a Salvadore Dali statue of “Saint George
and the Dragon” in the chateau courtyard. The wine tasting comes
with an informative lesson on the wines of the region and the particular
processes at the chateau and a relaxing rose garden.
The Chateau de Pommard is open 7 days a week from March 9 to November 30 9:30 to 6:30. Just 2 kilometers from the center of Beaune, without a car the chateau winery is close enough for a bike ride, a healthy hike, or public bus from Beaune to the ville of Pommard. Beaune rail station is a TGV French high speed rail stop about two hours from Paris and a half hour from Dijon. © Bargain Travel Europe
