AIR BERLIN - DUSSELDORF TO BERLIN
Two Cities for the Price of One
With a rising exchange rate travelers who still want to go to Europe are looking for money saving ways to see as much as possibly on a trip while perhaps finding a few unique memories. Try two cities on one trip. Fly from North America to Europe on KLM and stop over in Amsterdam with a twelve to 22 hour layover and head into the city of bicycles and diamonds. Fly to Eastern Europe through Munich and stop-over at the Munich Flughafen (see Munich Airport Lay-Over) and visit the Bavarian beer capital.
Or fly to Berlin, Europe’s most exciting fastest changing capital city of bohemian nightlife and museums and fly stop over in Dusseldorf the north city on the Rhine (see Dusseldorf on the Rhine). Air Berlin purchased LTU the German long haul tourist airline making it easy to combine the two cities in one trip. Fly from one of Air Berlin’s departure cities and connect on separate flight through Dusseldorf’s easy to manage airport (see More Flights to Dusseldorf) and off to Berlin on Air Berlin. Allow a few days stop-over in Dusseldorf on the way over or the way back.
Air Berlin now offers expanded non-stop service from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Dusseldorf (see AirBerlin San Francisco) in addition to its eastern hubs in New York and Miami, with connecting codeshare flights with American Airlines and Finnair, now that Air Berlin has joined the OneWorld Alliance frequent flyer program.
AirBerlin originally started with two aircraft flying out of West Berlin when the country was divided by a wall, with the company first incorporated by American pilots in Oregon, USA. Having gone through the several ownership transitions, the Berlin based airline has in the past few years of rapid expansion become Germany’s second largest airline and Europe’s third largest low cost discount airline, flying to 97 destinations in Germany and other European countries. First growing as a tour operator based airline Air Berlin became known for its “Majorca Shuttle” flights.
The Berlin-based airline, voted "Best Budget Airline" for two years in a row, takes off from a total of 18 German airports expanding its domestic Germany routes. At Air Berlin the flights between German airports and major European cities such as London, Paris, Vienna, Zurich, Copenhagen, Milan, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rome, Barcelona and Budapest, with new routes to Gothenburg and Stockholm. But still maintains its connections to Majorca, making over 300 flights a week to Palma de Majorca airport from destinations around Europe connecting to a further 17 destinations on the Spanish mainland and Portugal.
If making a connection from an Air Berlin international route to an intra-European route, keep in mind that there are two different baggage rules. On international flights there is a two bag rule (luggage and carry-on) similar to other long distance airlines. On intra-European flights Air Berlin has instead a weight based rule, allowing a maximum of 22 kilos total baggage weight before extra charges apply. However if making a connection from an international flight, show your connecting ticket when checking in for the short haul and they will accept the two bagger. Plus they are still in the process of melding through computer systems, so one systems may not fully communicate with the other.
If you can
afford a little more comfort, Air Berlin is upgrading its Business
Class on
its long-haul flights to New York,
Los Angeles, Miami, Fort Myers, Beijing and Shanghai with fully reclining
seats forming a Premium Business Class. While other airlines are adding
a premium economy class (see BMI
to Manchester)
Air Berlin is splitting its business class into two levels a “Relaxed
Class” and “Premium
Business Class”, though this is not yet available on all routes
and aircraft. © Bargain
