HOTEL KAVALIERHAUSER KÖNIGS WUSTERHAUSEN
Quiet Castle Hotel near Berlin’s Schoenfeld Airport
King
Friedrich Wilhelm I (Frederick William I) the second king of Prussia
who ruled from 1713 to 1740 was by all accounts a serious and
frugal fellow, who actually paid the same taxes he imposed on his subjects.
Known as the “Soldier King” for his fascination with things
military, recognized for creating the largest army of the time, which
never actually fought much but drilled a lot. It was Frederick-William’s
Prussian Army which developed the distinctive Prussian marching step.
He especially liked tall soldiers and sought them out for his army, which
is reflected in the high ceilings of the 300 year old castle hotel lodgings
of the Kavalierhauser Konigs Wusterhausen. The Schloss Wusterhausen was Friedrich Wilhelm’s small out-of-town palace in the center of what is now Königs Wusterhausen, a quiet suburb of Berlin in Brandenburg, about 30 minutes south east of the city center near Schöenfeld Airport, soon Berlin-Brandenburg (see Berlin-Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport ). The castle owners offer three rooms for lodging, providing a unique glimpse into the life of the Prussian Soldier King of the Hohenzollern dynasty (see Hohenzollern Castle). The rooms at the Konigs Wusterhausen Kavalier Hauser (Cavalry House) are located in what were formerly the soldier’s barracks of the castle. Across the courtyard were the stables. More bed & breakfast than hotel proper, don’t expect royal service. No hotel front desk, room service or mini-bar here. Collect your own key at the restaurant and you're left pretty much on your own. The other part of the barracks building is occupied by the offices of an ambulance service. The rooms (zimmer) are large, former officers quarters, almost an apartment of fresh exposed wood beams with a view of the schloss, wooded park grounds and restaurant, which stays open until midnight. You can almost imagine the king’s soldiers drilling on the cobblestone square as the king observed from his castle window. One expects to hear ghostly bootsteps on the stairs, but all is quiet and still, especially if there are no other guests at home.
The fine restaurant at the Kavalier Hauser brews its own beer and you can try the “Historiches Menu” which features an official recipe of venison once served to the king in the 1700’s. Breakfast is served at the bakery-café in another part of the former stables. For things to do in Konigs Wusterhausen, a tour of the schloss can be taken and there is a small museum across the street. A music school occupies part of the castle buildings and concerts are occasionally held at the schloss as are period solder re-enactor musters in the summer. There is a schedule on the website (in German). By train, the station is 5 minutes walk and is served by the regional rail line RE2 (26 minutes from Alexanderplatz) and the S-Bahn S46 from Berlin Ostbahnhof. By car, Konigs Wusterhausen is at the crossing of the A10 (Berliner Ring) and A13 autobahns, 10 minutes south of Schöenefeld Airport (to become the new expanded Brandenburg Berlin International Airport currently under construction to open in 2014. © Bargain Travel Europe
