Historic Romance Guesthouse of the Black Forest
The Black Forest of southern Germany shrouds the low mountains from

Located
on a historic main route through the Black Forest woodlands from Bavaria
to Strasbourg, the town of Oberkirch began as an important
village of the region since established in the under the German Holy
Roman Emperor Henry II in the 12th Century, a holding of the Counts
of Ortenau Oberkirchs. The city and the region suffered rule of many
forms over the centuries, was the center of the Peasant’s War
in 1525 and almost leveled by the French in the war of European Succession,
but for 350 years of its history the Gastehaus style accommodation Hotel
zur Oberen Linde has stood on the main street of the old town since
the 17th Century, at the foot of the Schwarzwald hills, a bewitching
example of Black Forest half-timber architecture, evoking the romance
of the old world.
Now one the collection of Romantik hotels, a group of unique historic hotels in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (see Hotel Stern Chur and Hotel Markusturm Rothenburg), the Romantik Hotel zur Oberen Linde is a family run hotel operated by proprietor Elizabeth Dilger and her family. The four star country hotel has 27 rooms, a full floor of which has authentic four-poster canopy beds. The front of the hotel faces the main street of Oberkirch, but behind it is a green park of walks and a fountain pool, in good weather a terrasse for lunch dining looks out on the garden. The hotel’s restaurant is known for its local regional cuisine of fish and game from the surrounding hills and lakes, and wines from local and world wineries.
Romantic Packages
Romantic hotel packages including meals, wine and two nights are offered as well as family packages for visitors to Europapark (30 minutes away), a wine walk is offered to the vineyards of the upper Linde. Bowling, tennis and golf are nearby, as well as hiking and biking in the forest hills. In winter, lifts and cross-country skiing at Black Hochstrasse are nearby. The area has castles to visit as well, the ruins of Schauenburg above Oberkirch and the castles of the Hohenzollerns (see Schloss Sigmaringen and Castle Hohenzollern), 15 to 20 minutes east, or learn to make Black Forest Cake (see Gmeiner Chocolatier Seminars).
Getting There
Traveling through the Black Forest is easier by car. The hotel has off street parking, or will provide for a shuttle to the Oberkirch rail station.
