BOX AND DESIGN BARS OF CHUR
Clubs for the Young in Switzerland's Oldest City
Chur
is a crossroads where the railway to the snow playgrounds of St Moritz
and the Glacier Express to Zermatt meet. The
bar scene in Chur offers a whole collection of design and style bars
to stave
off
the cold
winter nights with a beer or alcohol concoction. The narrow streets
of
Chur’s
old town on the west side are a maze where each turn of
a corner can find a bar or
nightspot.
Perhaps
the best
known of
Chur’s
bars is Tom’s Beer Box, located in the old town on the Untere
Gasse number 11, a rather tiny hole in the wall type place with a
cramped music stage for alternative live rock music, nearly unannounced
by
signage, but recognizable from the crowd spilling out the door. Tom’s
Beer Box is mostly known for its beer wall, where returning patrons
can
purchase their own personal bottle opener placed on the wall with
its owner’s name. Several bars can be found in the same section
of the old town on the south west side just inside the Obertor Gate.
The
Hemingway dedicated to the famous writer known for his drinking and
masculinely terse style is on Obere Gasse street, 
The
Valentino and American Sports Bar are on
Rabengasse.
The
Kulture
Bar,
spacious
and cool with its playful walls decorated like a fifth grade art
class yearbook is tucked into
an alley just around the corner. The QBar on Grabenstrasse is more
the place for cocktails with its blue
and
bricks
design and
contemporary
hit music, with windows which look out on the street to watch other
the bar hoppers.
Several
bars can be found on Welschdörfli Strasse just outside
the gate and across the river bridge. The sister club of Tom’s
Beer Box, the Schall und Rauch - meaning Noise and Smoke - is a lounge
bar at the Felsen Bar with a little more elbow room and relaxed warm
colors. Also here to the west of the old town, close to the Brambreusch
cable car, you’ll
find Chur’s
girlie nightclubs like the Octopussy, sexy dreams of leopard skin,
feather boas and female flesh, and expensive champagne.
Continue a bit further west a few bus stops you find the creepy and unique
Giger Bar, inspired by hometown artist HR Giger (Giger Bar Chur) of "Alien" fame. © Bargain
