MISANI CELERINA - ENGADINE
Style and Art Hotel Accommodation Near St Moritz
The
Hotel Misani in Celerina is by definition what you expect a boutique
hotel to be -
colorful, unique, just a slight jog
off the beaten track and fun. Celerina is a few minutes from St Moritz,
at the end of the winter park Bob Sled track (see Olympia
Bob Sled Run) which must be reconstructed each year when the sun gets long
in the sky and
the snows fall, creating the winter
wonderland for which St Moritz is famous. Staying in St Moritz in the
high season
can be
an
expensive
proposition, with
luxury
hotel suites going for a much as $2,000 a night at a 5 star resort.
In Celerina, a short bus, train or car ride
from the symbol of jet set deluxe, the 3 star Hotel Misani is world
away in price but comparable in style. Hotelier Jurg Mettler had an
idea, take a turn of the last century residence villa, create one of
a kind room designs and color schemes, pack it with warm and cozy restaurants
and
a couple of bars, popular with locals and a party spot when the ski
season packs the slopes of the Corviglia ski region and the “Ski
Engadine” winter sports arena.
The
rooms at the Misani Hotel are individually designed in geographic
themes at once romantic and
quirky. The Durango takes you to the old
Southwest US, the Abu Dhabi to the middle east, the Les Beaux to the
south of France. 39 rooms, each its own slightly rustic hideaway,
a sombrero and serapi hanging on the door as if a Toreador had just
left for his
lunch date, or giant tulip lamp glowing against a wall of cool mauve.
Even the elevator adds a touch of tactile fun, lined with petting worthy
furry cowhide. The bar lounge is popular with locals as well as a gathering
spot for guests. The Restaurant Voyage on the main floor is a modern
bistro with a choice of international dishes and natural dishes which
come with a Gault Millau recommendation. The Ustaria is in a wood paneled
room of the 1878 former Engadine villa offering local food with an
Italian influence. For the up-all-night party folk, breakfast is served
until four in the afternoon. In winter, the cave-like basement becomes
the Bodega, a tapas bar-lounge in the vaulted ceiling spaces and dark
corners, turned into a rowdy nightclub every second Monday.
The Misani Hotel is across the street from the Celerina bus stop,
a block from the train station and two minutes from the Corvoglia cable
car to the mountain slopes for winter family skiing and summer hiking
and mountain biking. The heart of St. Moritz is a short bus or train
ride, as is Pontresina, to catch the scenic Bernina Express, or drive
the Bernina Pass to Italy (see Driving Bernina Pass). The Misani Hotel
offers 2 and 3 night packages in summer including bus and cable tram
tickets, a special for the St Moritz Jazz Festival. The owner of the
Misani also operates the even more eclectic and out-of-the-way 10 room
Staz Hotel and Restaurant on the edge of the Stazersee alpine lake.
The little village of Celerina itself has 3 historic churches dating
back to the 15th and 17th Centuries as well as the winter and summer
sports activities. © Bargain
