ROMANTIK
HOTEL STERN CHUR
Cozy Style Romantic Stay in Graubunden

Since
an inn called the Stern (star) first opened in 1667, illustrated
in 17th century engravings,
for
over 330 years of the city’s
long history the Romantik Hotel Stern has been hosting
visitors transiting through Chur in a cozy and romantic style. Some
of the famous folks
who have stayed include American Novelist James Fennimore Cooper
in the 18th Century and German author and playwright Bertold Brecht
in the 20th. The hotel has passed through
several families over the years and is currently in the hands of Adrian
Mueller, who served an apprenticeship under previous family owners
who renovated the hotel in the 1980's before following a career that
has led over three continents until returning to his home town to
acquire
the
hotel
in 2006, bringing
innovations
from his experience with the
Shangri-La
chain of Asian luxury hotels to the Stern with
64 rooms and suites, including a classic 1933 Buick automobile that
can pick up quests at the rail station. The rooms are on three floors
with natural wood doors and traditional, though up to date furnishings.
The Buendner Stube restaurant on the first floor of the Hotel
Stern is one of the best in Chur, serving traditional Graubünden
dishes,
featuring wild game in
the alpine hunting season of autumn. To come
down the stairs from your room at the dinner hour is to enter one of
the best aromatic hotel lobbies in Switzerland. In spring, the restaurant
serves Asparagus dishes with the fresh harvest from its own asparagus
(spargel) plantation. The restaurant also features a selection of wines
from the local vineyards of this Swiss wine producing region as well
as international varieties. For a romantic candle lit dinner duet take
one of the little back cubbies. You might have a conversation with
one of the city's local artists.
There
is plenty to do in Chur on a rail stopover. The Romantik Hotel Stern
is located within 7
minutes walk from
the rail station in the city’s
pedestrian only zone old town. A short stroll takes you through the
heart of the village’s historic center, the main historic street
lined with shops and in the evening, Chur’s many
popular design bars with a lively night life. Tom's Beer Box is an
eclectic tiny crammed beer place noted in most guide books (see Tom's
and Design Bars of Chur) and the bar designed by fantasist and home
town boy H.R. Giger is a little
to the west of town (see Giger Bar Chur).
On
Sundays, the old cobbled streets of Chur are filled with market stalls.
For sporting, just
a few minutes walk from the old town, a cable car tram can carry
you
up to the Brambreusch mountain resort area for mountain hiking trails
in summer or skiing in winter. For the wine enthusiast, north of
Chur toward the holiday resort city of Bad Ragaz is the Graubüden
Wine Trail and since Graubuden is the land of Heidi, the Heidi Village
(Heidi
Dorf) is a twenty minute walk from the town of Meienfeld, reachable
by train in 15 minutes, car, Post Bus, or close enough for biking.
The historic romantic Hotel Stern became “Romantik” when it joined the marketing group of Romantik Hotels, which represents unique and eclectic hotel properties in German speaking Switzerland, Austria and Germany (see Hotel Markusturm Romantic Road and Oberen Linde Black Forest). The hotel also belongs to the group of Swiss Historic Hotels which includes the famous luxurious icons of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz and the Beau Rivage Palace in Lausanne. © Bargain Travel Europe
