DALEMAIN MANOR
Historic House and Gardens in Lakeland Fells
Driving through the northeast Cumbria lake district between Keswick and Penrith, a few miles from Ulswater Lake you come across a lovely old Georgian manor house. Dalemain, which means literally “manor in the valley” has been the home of the Hasell family since 1642, now the Hasell-McCosh family. The house itself is much older, with parts dating from the rein of Henry II, the great hall added in the 14th Century, additional rooms added in the 16th and the present impressive Georgian pink stone exterior added in the 1700’s.
The early house survived the Scottish Highland raids of northern England in the times of the Edwards (see Langley Castle). The many rooms which can be toured feature rich oaks, original family furnishings and heirloom portraits. The Chinese room features handpainted wall paper brought to England as ballast in a tea clipper ship, an ornate carved rococo Chippendale fireplace mantel by 18th Century craft artist Nathaniel Hedges and an early William Clement clock from 1680. The nursery has a collection of family toys from the beginning of the 20th century. In one of the medieval period stone barns is the Cumberland Yeomanry Museum. The old medieval hall and kitchen now serve as a tea room for visitors and makes for a nice stop on a Cumbria lake district exploration.
Perhaps
most notable about Dalemain are the extensive English gardens listed
as one of the top ten gardens
in North England
and Scotland by
Garden Watch, covering five acres of grottos and walks through herbaceous
plants and flowers, notably a Himalayan blue poppy distinct to Dalemain
At the far end of the grounds is a second family castle manor house from
the Plantagenet medieval days. Dacre Castle is a single keep built in
1307, granted to Lord William D'Acre by Edward II (see Knaresborough
Castle Ruins). Dacre Castle is not
on the tour, but is used as a residence. There are a number of events
at Dalemain throughout the
year, many gardening
related. The House and Gardens are open from Sunday to Thursday, with
only the tearoom and gardens open in winter months. Plants and produce
are sold from Dalemain’s extensive farmlands. The Ullswater Steamer
boats on the lakes at Pooley Bridge are two miles (see Ullswater
Steamers)
and the Dalemain House and Gardens are three miles from the M6 motorway
Junction
40 on
A592.
