THREE KESWICK GUEST HOUSES
Family owned B&B’s in Lake District Keswick
A market town of curious history and attractions, Keswick on Derwentwater in Cumbria, England, came to prominence in the 16th Century as a mining center, first to supply copper for the ships and arms of Queen Elizabeth I, then later graphite lead which made the first pencils, becoming Keswicks principal industry - before tourism. The Cumberland Pencil Museum is located near Keswick as well as the Mining Museum and oddly the Cars of the Stars Museum with its collection of famous movie and TV cars (see Keswick Cars of the Stars). Yet, the little country village of Keswick is mostly known as a spot to explore the northern lakes of the Cumbria Lake District. Settled between the calm waters of the lake of Derwentwater and the rolling hills of the lakeland fells, on the river Greta, Keswick is surrounded by country walks, cycling, biking, kayaking, and climbing activities, along with historic walks and guided rambles departing from the quaint town center.
There are a variety of cottage and bed & breakfast lodging accommodations around Keswick and the lakes, but for convenience its hard to beat a B&B type of guest house right in the center of the village, the shopping, pubs, restaurants and strolls of the old town just outside the front door with views of the hills and valleys of the Barrowdale Fells and Grisdale Pikes out the rear windows of your guest room. In a row of Victorian era townhouses in the heart of Keswick, are three family run guest houses on the main road of Bank Street with quite reasonable prices for a visit to Keswick and the lakes. Separately owned and operated, they each offer ensuite rooms and English or Continental breakfast, with an individual personal style. I’ll call them the three cousins, because they are next door to one another, the Shemara Guest House, on the end of the row has seven bedrooms, front and rear, all with views of fells the town, the kitchen at the Shemare serves a Thai menu in the evening, making it a little different for an English guest house, the Swiss Court Guest House also has seven rooms and comfortable family style dining room, the breakfast serves Cumbrian Free Range eggs and local Keswick made Cumberland sausage as well as Vegetarian choices, and the Thornleigh Guest House has five doubles rooms and one twin, all ensuite. Some of the bedrooms and vary in size and price, though only be a few pounds difference. Each of the guest houses boast four stars from the English tourism board.
By car, Keswick is off junction 40 on the M6 motorway and the A66. The guest houses have parking spaces in front, or across the street at the large town car park. By train, Keswick itself does not have a rail stop. The nearest rail station is at Penrith on the West Coast line with bus service running to Keswick from the Penrith Station. © Bargain Travel Europe
