TYROL – THE IMPERIAL ALPS
Innsbruck and the Olympic Ski World Region
The Tyrol Alps of western Austria is one of Europe's best, most convenient and affordable ski destinations. The scale of this famous Alpine destination is vast, with miles of downhill ski runs over an incredible choice of pitch and terrain. Start with Innsbruck the capital of the Tyrolean Alps, ruled by the Hapburgs Emperors for a couple of centuries, and host city to the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. Easily reached by train within two hours of Munich, Innsbruck is a vibrant city full of culture, nightlife and history. In Innsbruck you can stay right in the center of the city and still reach the slopes by funicular and cable car within 20 minutes. Or get your thrills on the newly redesigned ski jump tower just at the e edge of town. Stay at the Innsbruck Hilton and the ski jump is visible from your hotel room on the way to the casino downstairs. At the historic Goldener Adler Hotel (see Goldener Adler Innsbruck) in the center of the old city, the funicular is two blocks.
Innsbruck - Olympia Ski World
Innsbruck and its Olympia Ski World region has a total of nine ski areas encompassing 80 lifts and 177 miles of cross-country trails. You don’t need a car with Innsbruck as your ski center. A free shuttle will take you to any of the nine ski areas. Five nights (Sunday to Friday) can cost as little as €335 a person, including half board, a four-day ski pass and bus service to the ski slopes of Axamer Lizum and Glungezer. Come early or late in the season, and get a 10% discount off the accommodation package. Though you don’t have to stay in the big city - the small villages around Innsbruck in the mountain glens above are full of charm and affordable accommodations. At the Gasthof Isserwirt in Lans, doubles start at €50 per person.
Olympia Region Seefeld – Power Powder
The five villages of the Olympia Region Seefeld are located on a south-facing plateau at an altitude ¾ of a mile high, only 20 minutes away from Innsbruck Airport and 90 minutes from Munich’s International Airport. Known for the beauty of its landscapes and excellent cross-country skiing, the unique location of Seefeld always expects early snow. Great deals include three night stays for two in a B&B double starting at € 261, including a "Happy Ski Card" three-day ski pass. Stay for seven nights and the rate starts at € 561, with a six-day pass. Packages are offered in the 3, 4 and 5 star categories.
Save on your Ski Holiday Budget in the Austrian Tirol
The Tyrol Alps region has a whole range of B&B's, small pensions and farmhouses that offer accommodation for less coin. Cozy and lesser known mountain villages offer the best value, with no less hospitality. Tailor your ski pass to your particular needs. Don't buy a six-day pass if you are only going to ski in the mornings, or if you plan to spend your week on the blue runs. As delicious as the alpine cuisine is on the mountaintop, local markets will gladly pack sandwiches to take away in the morning for a more frugal lunch on the slopes. Or save on slope passes and just build a snowman with your family, start a snowball fight, or go sledding. Don’t be shy to make the local tourist office your first stop. Some offer passes with a week worth of discounts on local restaurants and other après-ski spots and use the pass booklets to find free local events and entertainment. Remember - hotel rates in Europe include taxes and service charges, and usually breakfast. “Half-board” rates include breakfast and dinner – though wine and drinks are extra. © Bargain Travel Europe
