ROTHENBURG’S
BURG HOTEL
Romantic Road Stay on the Medieval Walls
The medieval walled town of Rothenburg on the Tauber is perhaps the best known stop on Germany’s “Romantic Road” which makes its way through a chain of pearl of ancient towns from Southern Bavaria north into Franconia (see Following The Romantic Road). Rothenburg is famous as one of the best preserved of German medieval towns, with its legend of being saved from destruction in the 1400’s by the mayor’s drinking a massive draft of beer. Rothenburg’s walls are an adventure in themselves and at the top of the town wall on the west side of the city one can find Rothenburg’s Burg Hotel, sitting at the edge of a garden where the former Imperial Castle once stood. A few steps from the Burg Gate (Castle Gate) where city defenders might pour boiling oil on attackers in the middle ages.
The Burg Hotel in Rothenburg was established in 1979, once a jail for beggars in the middle-ages, now transformed into a romantic and serene popular accommodation spot to enjoy the tourist city. Burg Hotel means Castle Hotel, but the 12th Century Germany imperial castle which once ruled the domain around the city was destroyed in an earthquake in the 1300s. Remaining from the 14th century is the barn which now serves as the hotel’s parking garage and houses a pair of classic cars which guests can arrange for special events, or maybe a turn on the romantic road. The Burg Hotel is actually the smallest hotel in the old town with just 15 rooms and suites, including the themed Sleeping Beauty, Konstantin, the Tower, Bavaria and Bridal Suites. Rothenburg has attracted artists and romantics of all stripe. The view of the Taubertal (Tauber River Valley) from the hotel was made famous by Hans Prentzel’s 1929 painting of the "Blumen am Fenster (Flowers at the window) and Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky was inspired by the walking path and garden in 1902.
You can have breakfast on top of the city wall with a vista over the countryside across the Tauber River. A short stroll though a stone archway from the hotel takes you to the garden of the former Dominican Monastery next door. Many of the hotel’s rooms have garden views. The old town with its beautiful half-wood architecture and notorious torture museum (see Museums of Rothenburg) are a casual walk away. The modern town of Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber lies outside the walls.
The hotel is located on Klostergasse which is the main through street between the gates. If coming from the east through the Gallows Gate (Galgentor) the Galgengasse becomes Klostergasse. Prices range from 90€ to 170€ including breakfast. Rothenburg can get very busy in the high season summer months and at for the Christmas Market in December. © Bargain Travel Europe
