Romantic Heidelberg Hotel at the Old Bridge
One of the
most photographed angles of Heidelberg is of the Old Bridge across
the Neckar River with
the iconic beautiful ruins of Heidelberg
Castle on the hillside above. At the old town Heidelberg end of the old
bridge you’ll find the Hotel Holländer Hof, just off the river
road. The Hollander Hof has been a popular hotel for visitors to
Heidelberg since 1613 when it was called the Hotel de Hollande for the
Dutch timber merchants who transported huge barges of wood on the Neckar
to the Rhine and northward. The hotel was the favorite of poet Joseph
Victor von Scheffel who stayed often and from one of its rooms wrote “Old
Heidelberg, dear city, with honors crowned and rare, o’er Rhine
and Neckar rising, none can with Thee compare”. The Hotel Hollander
Hof has been modernized, and is now a part of the City Partner Hotels
Group, but retains much of its 400 year old flavor.
The Hotel
Holländer
Hof has 39 rooms, which combine tradition with a modern contemporary
spirit. Many of the rooms have views of the Neckar
River across to the famous Philosophers Walk, or of the old city. Within
a block is the main shopping street of Old Heidelberg and the town market
square with the historic town hall and old Church of the Holy Ghost – the
Heiliggeistkirche. The cobblestone pedestrian neighborhoods surrounding
are filled charming restaurants and pubs. Just around the corner from
the hotel is the famous old students hangout – The Schnookeloch
- with several hundred years of Heidelberg’s university students
initials carved into the tables. The hotel has its own traditional restaurant
with terrace views of the Neckar with its boats and barges, trundling
under the old bridge. Most of the sights of Heidelberg are easily reached
on foot. The front desk can provide information on activities. Neckar
River cruise boat docks are about 300 yards away. The Hollander Hof has
two rooms especially fitted for the handicapped, a popular place to stay
for athletes of the Heidelberg Marathon.
If
arriving by car, drop off luggage in the little parking lot in front
of the hotel. You’ll
be given a map to the parking structure number 2, with an arrangement
with the hotel for a discount. It sounds a bit
complicated at first, but is quite easy. The parking structure for the
hotel is the same location as the Bergbahn funicular to the castle. If
arriving in Heidelberg by train, the station is a bit away from the old
town, a five minute cab ride or city bus line 35 along the Neckarstaden. Bargain
