ROMANTIK HOTEL MARKUSTURM
Rothenburg ob der Tauber Romantic Stay at the Gates
The
historic Hotel Markusturm is the sort of period stylish old world charm
hotels one expects to find in “old” Europe. In a former
customs house which dates all the way back to 1264, the Hotel Markusturm,
stands on the central street of the magical Rothenburg ob der Tauber,
the famous medieval village of Franconian Bavaria. The hotel is located
next to the Markusturm, or St. Mark’s Tower, the gate to the old
city where taxes were collected predating the thick medieval walls that
surround the 14th Century Rothenburg through the Rödertor. The
hotel structure has been a travelers inn for 500 years,
serving wandering
merchants,
pilgrims and sight-seeing tourists. Today the hotel is of course, updated
from the middle-ages, the rooms are decorated with a mix of antique character
and modern amenities.
The Romantik Hotel Markusturm is one of the best reviewed hotels in quaint
picturesque Rothenburg, recognized for its service, friendly staff, as
well as location right in the middle of the
old
town.
The hotel run by the Berger family, has an
excellent
restaurant serving country flavors. The aroma of Franconian apple cake
will waft through the atmosphere. Try the famous Wine Soup or Duck Breast
with Balsalmic–Honeybutter, and the local dessert treat of cinnamon-suger
coated “Schneeballs”. A shaded courtyard provides a respite
from the tourist crowds which can fill the cobblestone streets of this
very popular touring town.
Romantic Medieval Rothenburg
Rothenburg
ob der Tauber (over the Tauber River) is the known for its finely preserved
medieval style and gingerbread architecture, a jewel
of the
middle-ages (see Rothenburg
Ob Der Tauber Museums). Many other old towns
in Germany had to be reconstructed after the war. Rothenburg was mostly
untouched,
not near any industry center. Rothenburg is one of the towns on Germany’s
Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) and is recognizable from the
movie “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” where the child-catcher chases
kids in the ficticious town of Vulgaria. The nearest major city
is Nuremberg also known for its medieval walls, and about two hours from
Munich, Stuttgart or Frankfurt. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is located off
the A7 autobahn. Rates at the Romantik Hotel Markusturm range from € 90-130
for a single and €125-190 for a double, depending on season.
The hotel has parking, otherwise at a premium inside the old city
behind the walls. © Bargain
