HOTEL RITTER ST GEORG
Romance of Old Town Heidelberg
St
George and his dragon slaying doings got around. Statues and icons
marking connection
to the medieval knight of legend sprout from Croatia
to England, and certainly Germany has its claim. There’s no record
he ever stayed in a hotel in Heidelberg, but the magnificent façade
of the medieval city’s old town’s most recognized hotel bears
his name. First built as a trade house in 1592,
by
a cloth merchant Carolus Belier, the The Hotel Zum Ritter St.
Georg on the old town’s main
street where pedestrians stroll past the town hall square below one of
the world’s most famous castles is one of the city’s
most recognized buildings. The ornately carved red sandstone
facade with columned fluted windows and curled gable from the same Renaissance
period as the castle, with its gold inscription "Persta
invicta, Venus" (Remain Forever Unconquered, Beauty), perhaps represents
the ideal of beautiful old Heidelberg.
The Hotel zum Ritter St. Georg (Knight of St George) has
37 rooms and suites in the old building and a new section
behind. The historic town house has undergone many
renovations over the centuries from it’s Renaissance beginnings.
The rooms are modern in function while maintaining a simple elegance
of the past. Some rooms have views of the street and some look toward
the castle on the mountain side behind. The hotel has two restaurants,
the Ritterstube and the Beiler with menus of regional dishes and international
fare. The Ritterstube on the ground floor of the old building maintains
the old world style of its origins with dark wood paneling and vaulted
ceilings offering the romantic setting of a cozy corner promised by the
name as the knight’s parlor.
The
Hotel zum Ritter St Georg was until recently part of the association
of Romantik Hotels,
representing historic hotels of charm (see Romantik
Hotel Markusturm Rothenberg) but have gone on a solitary
quest like namesake St. George. The Hotel Ritter St Georg is located
right in the center
of
the old
town
on Hauptstrasse across from the Heiliggeistkirche (Holy Spirit Church)
on the market square. The castle and other old sites are an easy walk.
If traveling by car, parking, like most hotels in
the
old town,
is
at
the P12 parking
garage where the funicular to the castle departs (see Touring
Heidelberg Castle). Room rates range from €72
for a standard single to €206 for a deluxe double or suite, a little
higher in high season. © Bargain
