GLOBETROTTER ODYSSEY HOSTEL BERLIN
Friedrichshain’s Original Hip Hostel Hangout
In the hazy heady days of the late 90’s, not quite a decade since
the wall came crumbled, the freedoms of the west began to feel permanent,
young people were rushing to discover the excitement of a revitalized
Berlin and youth hostels were growing in popularity, one of the first
to open in the former east section of the city was the Globetrotter Odyssey
Hostel. Opened in 1998, taking over a closed factory building in a former
railroad neighborhood, the Odyssey retains a bit of that East Berlin
feeling, entering through the heavy duty factory doors, keeping some
of that sense of the wild decade of anarchist art and social vibrancy.
The neighborhood of Friedrichshain just to where the Odyssey is located
to the east of the Ost Bahnhof has gained a growing popularity of hipless
as a student area with clubs and restaurants.
The Globetrotter Odyssey Hostel is primarily a dorm style hostel with
3 to 8 beds per room, starting at 10 euros in winter and 13.50 in summer.
Some private rooms with showers are available. The reception is open
24 hours with a bar and common eating area for socializing under the
creepy fun gaze of some ghoulish art figures from a comic book fantasy
world with a pool table and table soccer, and the Red Rooster Bar downstairs
is a late night drinking and eating neighborhood hangout. Breakfast for
3 euros is served in the reception area from 8:00am. There is a guest
kitchen for preparing food for yourself or a few selected friends, Restaurants
of an eclectic variety from budget friendly ethic styles or hip crowded
drinking bars are within a block or two. The former rail yard area near
Warschauer Strasse Station has been reclaimed from decay with an outdoor
free-climbing wall and a beer garden, surrounded by music venues and
art spaces.
There are other hostels in Berlin easier to get to, the new A&O hostel
located at the main train station or the Ostel right next to Ost Bahnhof,
but the Odyssey fits the bill if you’re looking for a bit of the “real” Berlin.
To get to the Globetrotter Odyssey Hostel, city bus 240 from both the
Hauptbahnhof and the Ostbahnhof stops almost directly at the hostel,
get off at Gruenberger Strasse. The ride from the Ost will be much quicker
if taking the bus. By U-Bahn take the U5 from Alexanderplatz the nearest
stop is Frankfurter Tor at Karl Marx Allee and a short walk on Warschauer
Strasse to Gruenberger Number 23. From Tegel Airport take the express
bus to Alexanderplatz and the U5. From Shoenfeld Airport take S-Bahn
to Warshauer Str or the regional train to Ost Bahnhof for the bus. The
Ost Bahnhof is about a five East Berlin long block walk if you don’t
want to wait for the bus.
If an actual hotel with full ensuite bath and accoutrements is more your
style, but the vibrant student life neighborhood without the dorm living
is an attraction, the Junkers'
Hotel Garni is right next door. © Bargain
