ABBEY HOTEL ROSCOMMON
Manor House Castle Hotel Western Ireland
The
Abbey Hotel in Roscommon is not a monastic retreat, but a romantically
set charming
former 18th Century country Gothic revival manor house.
The Abbey Hotel gets its name from the ruins of a 13th Century Dominican
Monastery Abbey, literally outside the back door of the hotel (beyond
the helipad!). The Roscommon Abbey was founded in 1253 by Felim O’Connor,
the son of Cathal Mor O’Connor the High King Connacht. The remaining
beautifully haunting early Gothic ruins comprise only about a fifth of
the original
monastery. Sacked and destroyed after the English reformation,
the nave and partial abbey walls are what remain.
The church and grounds
were acquired
by Sir Nicolas Malby in 1577. A tomb of the Roscommon Abbey founder
Felim O’Connor can still be found among the ruins, with an original
stone from 1290 replaced by a 15th Century tomb.
Roscommon's castle would guard the ancient main road from the north of
Ireland to Galway and the Friars of the Dominican Abbey would provide
food and
hospitality for travelers. The Abbey Hotel in Roscommon still serves
that function in an elegant luxurious style.
The
4 star Abbey Hotel of Roscommon, first opened as an accommodation in
1962 is set on lush garden
grounds with 50 individually designed bedrooms,
a few in the manor house with a classic old world style, including the
Abbey Suite with its four poster bed and freestanding bath for those
romantic special occasions, but most in a modern added section taking
up some of the former monastery grounds, behind turreted stone walls.
The Abbey Hotel is very popular for weddings as well as conferences.
For
relaxation,
the
hotel’s
Leisure Club is complimentary for all guests, including the 20m indoor
swimming pool, Sauna and Steam Room, a fully equipped gymnasium and a
spa therapy room. The Abbey Hotel’s bar provides a cozy retreat
with comfortable couches and crackling fire in the hearth with the feel
of an Irish lord’s study. The restaurant, a popular spot for locals,
offers a varied menu of innovative dishes prepared with produce from
local farms.
