COOKING CLASSES IN IRELAND
Irish Cookery Schools Vacation in Irish Castles
Everyone
was leaving Ireland in the days of the Potato Famine because there
was nothing
to eat. Today those days properly belong in the history
books and Irish cooking has traveled far beyond Irish Stew - now
some of the world’s best chefs come from Ireland. The lush farmlands
of the Emerald Isle produces grass fed beef and lamb, farm bred pork
as
well as Wild Boar and Venison. Farmers Markets teem with fresh local
grown organic produce, from the historic St Georges’s Market in
Belfast to the Macreddin Market in County Wicklow, and the waters on
the North and Irish Seas yield bounties of fish and sea creatures. The
Oyster Festival in Galway every fall is famous around the world.
For foodies on vacation, nothing might be more enjoyable than spending an afternoon in the kitchen, up to the elbows in soda bread dough and flour, or learning to make the ideal dish of Colcannon. There are cookery schools all over Ireland in locations from east to west, north to south. Courses range from three month certificate arcs to one day afternoon cooking demonstrations. Many Irish cooking schools offer the opportunity to combine an Ireland vacation with a short cooking class against a backdrop of lush countryside or a bit o’ history. But why not take a cooking lesson holiday at an Irish Castle.
Howth Castle Cookery School
Just
outside of Dublin overlooking in the seaside harbor village of Howth,
this
cooking school
is situated in the restored and updated Georgian
era kitchen of Howth Castle on the grounds of the Deer Park Hotel, Spa
and Golf Course (property is currently undergoing some changes). Howth Castle is still the residence and ancestral home
of the St Lawrence family for 800 years and Lady St Lawrence is the host
of the cooking school. The Kitchen in the castle school courses range
from two and a half hour demonstrations of cooking techniques and discussions
of a variety of
foods culminating in tastings with wine to short themed
instructional courses, full single day courses of 6 hours on Saturdays,
including a sit down meal focusing on seasonal entertaining, French Provincial
and Seafood. The Kitchen at the Castle offers
the perfect opportunity for “Da” to get in a round of golf
while m’lady discovers a new recipe and luxuriates in a mud wrap
and spa treatment. Kitchen in The Castle
