JAZZ à JUAN
Antibes - Juan-les-Pins International Jazz Festival - July
The international jazz festival at Juan-le-Pins, the oldest continuous
jazz festival
in Europe, "Jazz à Juan," celebrated its 50th anniversary
in 2010 paying tribute to the great musicians, like Miles Davis and and Ray
Charles,
who have performed ever since 1960 in the legendarily beautiful setting
of the Gould pine grove on the Mediterranean Riviera. In addition
to the main line-up, the entire city with reverberate with music during
the festival, as marching bands parade down the streets, hotels host
concerts
that
with fans streaming onto the terraces, and late-night sets fill the
local venues. The
Cote d'Azur town continues to pave the way for a future
generation of young artists with the "Jazz à Juan
Révélations" - a series of concerts promoting
young jazz musicians on the Grove stage.
As early as the 1920s, the Antibes suburb of Juan-les-Pins was the meeting place for the literati and intellectual elite, when wealthy American expatriot Gerald Murphy attracted the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and other friends from Paris, and brought American jazz to play in the casino, bringing a new art of living to the coast of Southern France. The "Jazz à Juan" festival was created in 1960 as a tribute to the great saxophone player Sidney Bechet, and has since sparked many other festivals across Europe, like the Montreux Festival on the shores of Lake Geneva.
The concept of the fest was revolutionary. For the first time, the general public could discover, up close, the greats of jazz music in a gorgeous setting under the 100 year old pine trees of the Pinède Gould, facing the umbrella festooned beaches of the Mediterranean and in the shade of Juan Les Pins casino. The risky gamble paid off, beginning a permanent festival celebrating jazz in all its forms: New Orleans, Gospel, Blues, Swing, Be-Bop, Latin Jazz, Cool Jazz, Hard-Bop, Free Jazz, Jazz-Rock, Modern Jazz and Electro-Jazz.
The Jazz à Juan Festival launched the favorites Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald in Europe — and more recently, Keith Jarrett, Sonny Rollins and Jamie Cullum, and continues to welcome an exceptional variety of artists.
