BURG STAUFENECK
Castle Hotel and Restaurant in the Swabian Alb
The lands of northern Swabia between the Neckar and Donau Rivers were
once held by the Staufer kings who built a string of castles to control
the hilly forested lands from Stuttgart to Nuremburg sometimes called Stauferland,
now split between Baden-Wurttemburg and lower Bavaria. In the year 1080,
Ludwig von Staufen built a tower fortress on a hilltop in the Alb near
the town of Salach. From the 14th to 16th Centuries the castle was owned
by the von Rechenbergs until the last died out in 1599. The castle changed
hands several times until abandoned in the 1800s and gradually fell into
ruins, with only the main tower still and several farm outbuildings surviving.
The Burg Staufeneck
castle Hotel and Restaurant now take up the remaining ruins of the former
medieval castle, transformed in 2002 into a 5 star
hotel property and gourmet restaurant often listed as one of the top 30

overlooking
