MARKLIN
MUSEUM - GOPPINGEN
Märklin Model Train Experience at the Factory Store
Marklin is
the premiere German model train manufacturer known for its intricately
detailed authentic
trains, mostly of European designs. Large versions of
the massive black and red steam engines which powered Germany’s industrial
rise in the 19th and 20 centuries can still be found in transportation museums
around the country (see Berlin
Technik Museum and Bochum
Dahlhausen Rail Museum) but the miniature versions manufactured
by the Marklin company for 150 years can be explored at the Marklin Museum
in Göppingen, about
20 minutes east of Stuttgart.
The Marklin Experience
(Märklin Erlebniswelt) is the name for the museum
now, once a room at the actual plant, the museum is now a display of rooms
at what is essentially the factory flagship store in Goppingen. On display
are a variety of Marklin's historic models, starting with the “Stork
Leg”, the first Marlin model locomotive engine from 1891. The rare
Märklin "crocodile" and the LMS 800 from 1938, of which only
34 pieces were exported, one of the highest rated locomotives of the Marklin
system.
Also here are a working model submarine from 1930 made by Marklin
a bit off the railroad path, with a “mysterious drive” engine
for propulsion, where an alcohol burner turned a copper screw with the hot
water flowing out. And the smallest operation steam engines from 1919. Diaramas,
exhibits of railroading history and working model sets in accurate landscapes
complete the museum, along with videos and activities for kids.
Outside
is an historic rail coach on which the miniature version, common with Marklin
train starter sets is modeled, is on view. rest of the space is devoted
to current Marklin products in a sort of train
modelers
candy
store,
where
the modern versions of the
historic heritage cars can be purchased along with accessories. There is
also a service point for repair of Märklin products.
