TIPI
AM KANZLERAMT
Berlin Cabaret Tent Entertainment in the Park
The
cabaret entertainments of the prewar years has been returning to present
Berlin
in a big way.
Venues have been popping up around the German
capital, some an attempt to recreate the period feel of the 20s and 30s
when the likes of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya and the Comedian Harmonists
performed in front of dining and drinking audiences in supper clubs.
The world depicted in the stage musical and Bob Fosse movie of “Cabaret” as
it descended to raunch review as the one big party of the decadent
20s was replaced by another kind of “party” altogether. The
golden age of the supper club was actually before the First World War,
during the time of the Kaiser at the turn of 20th Century when the concert
performances were presented under tents in the Tierpark.
The
Tipi Am Kanzleramt, first opened in 2002, recalls that earlier age
in a
contemporary remix
of dinner show entertainment in the park. The
TIPI (teepee) means pretty much what it sounds like, taking the Lakota
American plains Indian word for house, but rather than a temporary buffalo
hide tent, the Tipi Am Kanzleramt (Tipi at the Chancelery) takes the
form of a semi-permanent coated canvas circus big top. Inside the tent
theater a surprisingly broad expanse of tables, in a colorfully sparkling
blue lined room under the chandelier, spread on tier levels in a semi
circle around the stage,
where
packed
audiences dine on eclectic seasonal cuisine before the show begins and
harried waiters serve drinks before and
at intermissions. The atmosphere is festive and tables so close you almost
have no choice but to make
a few friends of stangers.
Seating
is mostly at the tables for six, with some tables
for two
or four. An outdoor beer garden provides
a spot to spend some time in the summer weather before showtime, while
in colder weather and large lobby bar can serve as a respite. The entertainment
at the TIPI is a changing variety of performers and touring acts, national
and international shows, from leaping Austrailian beat-boxer percussionists
to big bands, nouveau dance, music and variety acts and even big stage
musicals.
The
Tipi am Kanzleramt theater is located on the Große Querallee
in the Tierpark west of the Brandenburg
Gate, a short walk from the Reichstag with its
glass dome (see Visiting
the Reichstag
Dome), surrounded by the new buildings
of the German national ministries, and a somewhat longer stroll from
Berlin’s Bahnhof main train station, the two nearest underground
stops. Dinner with the show is not required, drinks and appetizers are
probably more the norm. The doors open at 6:30 Monday to Saturday and
5:30 on Sunday with the performance starting about 90 minutes later.
Tickets for the shows generally range from 16 Eur to 30 Eur, for some
shows up to 40 or 60 Eur. Meals and drinks are
separate. Seating is first come first served within the same price level
(distance from the stage), unless reserved in advance with a show and
dinner package. © Bargain
