EDELWEISS
HOTEL & RESTAURANT
Swiss Alpine Cuisine and Entertainment in Geneva
Geneva
seems an unlikely place to encounter lederhosen clad yodelers. The
great city
of French speaking Switzerland is more known for it
exclusive lakeside ritzy establishments catering to the Michelin star
dress-up crowd with steep prices and the tinkling of silverware over
hushed conversations. If you’re looking for a meal that’s
a bit more lively or something to entertain the kids, the Edelweiss
Restaurant, located in the cellar of the hotel of same name may be
the spot.
Edelweiss
is the name of that delicate flower which only grows at high altitudes
in the Alps and the Edelweiss Restaurant represents an authentic
Swiss Chalet in the heart of Geneva. From
the street, a modern 5 story building among a
row of others, but the warm glow emanating tells you something different
is inside. Entering through the hotel lobby past cozy armchairs around
the fireplace, a short trip down the stairs, past the stuffed animal
St Bernard mascot, suddenly carries you away to the
Alps, a
world of rustic wooden
beams festooned with flowers of red and green,
plaster and flagstone walls, and heart shaped hand carved chairs. With
seating on two levels, bench seating for groups
and families on the main floor and above with views out the chalet
windows looking down onto a stage where the nightly entertainment accompanies
the dipping of cheese, meat, and even chocolate fondue and other traditional
Swiss dishes. The
Edelweiss
Restaurant caters mostly to visitors to Geneva and tourists.
Don’t expect a staid quiet evening, but
a rather raucous time of yodeling, Swiss Folk Music with mountain horn
blowing and cow bells. The performers invite participation, especially
from the children who seem to especially appreciate the magical noise
of mysterious instruments like the marble in the ceramic bowl ringing
bell. The Edelwiess can be a charming spot for a romantic dinner as
well, but expect a communal experience. Reservations are definitely
recommended, you can book a table online or by phone +41 (0) 22 544
5151. For a quieter evening, reserve a little later.
The Edelweiss
Hotel maintains the chalet themes though its 42 rooms, with natural
wood
furnishings and traditional Swiss Alpine decorations.
The 3-star hotel accommodation is a lower cost option in a pricey city,
operated by the Manotel group, which has two other properties in Geneva.
Several rooms have extra bedding for families where children under
12 can stay for free with parents. The Edelweiss Hotel has no car parking,
but is about 5-10 minute walk from Geneva’s main train station
and two blocks from the lakeshore on the Rue du Leman, near to the
boat port on Lake Geneva. © Bargain
