THE
EINSTEIN HOTEL – ST GALLEN
The Small Grand Hotel, Spa and Congress Center
The Einstein
Hotel, Congress and Spa, noted for its classic white facade and crisp
interiors
with sparkling star lamps has become a fixture of St Gallen hospitality
for a quarter century, becoming known as the “Small Grand Hotel” for
its subtle elegant style, located in a peaceful corner of town at the
edge of the historic medieval pedestrian zone with its iconic Oriel
windows and the magnificent St Gallen Abbey. Individually designed
spacious light filled rooms of luxurious materials, cherry wood, silk
curtains, natural down duvets, marble bathrooms and lambs wool carpets
make the Einstein a worthy accommodation for business or leisure.
In
answer to your first question – no, the Einstein Hotel in
St Gallen has nothing to do with the mathematician and father of atomic
theory, Albert Einstein. Though the scientist is associated with his
time in Switzerland, the boutique hotel in St Gallen owes its name
to embroidery manufacturer and exporter, I. D. Einstein who housed
his company in the building first constructed in 1830. St Gallen is
world renowned for its textile industry (see Textile
Museum St Gallen),
producing the laces which adorn Paris fashion runways, and the building
had a long connection to that history until converted to a hotel in
1983 by local textile manufacturer Max Kriemler. Twenty years later
the hotel was extended to building next door, adding 48 deluxe hotel
rooms, now offering 113 rooms and suites. In 2009, a Congress Center
and Spa opened to make the Einstein hotel a destination unto itself.
As a business
hotel with the brand newly opened St Gallen Congress Center connected
to
the hotel just across the street, the Einstein
is fitted with all the amenities of a business destination, free internet
in the rooms, executive center, meeting and banquet facilities. For
tourists to this romantic world heritage city set in the Steinach River
valley between Lake Constance and the Alpstein Mountains, the Einstein
Hotel is an easy stroll from the historic center of town, or the Mühleggbahn
Funicular to the hills above the city with wild walks, a green recreation
park, views from the mountains to Lake Constance.
Views
of the old city can also be had while dining, for business lunch
or
taking breakfast
in the Einstein Hotel’s Panorama Restaurant,
located on the former attic floor of the hotel. Surrounded by the warmth
of exposed wood beams and the signatory half-moon window looking out
on the red tile roofs of the city and bell towers of St Gallen Abbey
famed for its baroque library (see St
Gallen Abbey Library), the
gourmet restaurant at the Einstein has
been awarded with 13 Gault Millau points for its seasonal dishes of
local ingredients focusing on healthy, authentic and natural cuisine
from chef, Ralph Leisi available with a selection of uniiqe local
regional wines and world wide varieties from the extensive cellar.
On the ground floor the Einstein’s
English style bar is a comfy spot to relax and unwind.
The Einstein Wellness Spa is located in the congress center, with
the latest strength and endurance machines, offering aerobic training
course, a bio-sauna with its invigorating ice-cave, steambath, massages
and treatments. The pool on the atrium fourth floor is bathed in skylight
which penetrates through to levels below through the transparent floor.
The Einstein Hotel is easy to reach by public transportation, by car
with its own parking garage, or even on foot, only about 5 blocks from
the St Gallen main train station. The shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee)
are a 20 minute train ride away. The hotel can suggest walks in the surrounding
mountains or arrange for start times at nearby 18 hole golf courses
of Waldkirch and Appenzell. © Bargain
