ROMANTIK HOTEL CASTELLO SEECHLOSS
Ascona Castle Hotel on Lago Maggiore
In the 13th
Century, the noble Milanese de Ghirigilioni family owned large portions
of land
in Valley Leventina above Lago Maggiore in northern
Italy. They built a castle on the shores of the lake to control the trade
routes of boats transporting goods from the lower Alpine valleys across
the lake to the river into Milan. The small fortress was originally enclosed
by a wall with four guard towers at the corners with the south-east wall
bordering directly on the lake with its own boat jetty into the lake.
Dry moats surrounded around the three remaining walls, protecting the
family’s position from rivals. After 400 years in Ascona, the descendants
returned to Milan and the castle fell into disuse and gradually demolished
to make way for newer structures. What remains of the original castle
on the shore of Lago Maggiore on the shore promenade of the resort town
of Ascona has been turned into a 4 star hotel – the Romantik Hotel
Castello Seeschloss.
The Hotel Castello Seeschloss is composed of three buildings surrounding
a private garden and pool. The main structure and the two towers of which
date back to the 13th century, have a romantic castle hotel atmosphere
with rooms facing the lake, some with balconies. The two newer buildings,
the Casa Marionetta, built where the former stable stood and getting
its name from the marionette theater of Ascona which once performed there
and the Casa Rosa which looks out on the pool, feature cozy standard
and superior type rooms. Some rooms are air conditioned, some not.
Where
the other restaurants along the Ascona Piazza promenade are back from
the waters edge separated by the concrete walk, the Castello Seeschloss
has the only garden on the lake where guests can enjoy a meal in with
an unobstructed view of the lake and the Brissago islands. The Restaurant
Locanda de Ghiriglioni offers a selection of a la carte dishes and gourmet
menus for dinner accompanied by fine wines from the cellar, while half-board
included three-course dinners are served in the Castello dining room.
In summer meals are served on the palm terrace overlooking the Piazza
of Ascona and the Lago Maggiore. The Romantik Hotel Castello Seeschloss
is located on the lakeside promenade
of Ascona, 330 yards from the center a short stroll from the Ascona transportation
center and bus stop and has its own parking lot and garage. The Hotel
Castello Seeschloss is open from March to November and closed in winter.
Ascona makes for an ideal starting point for boat trips on the Lago Maggiore,
with sights such as the botanical garden "Isole di Brissago" or
the Borromean Islands. Artist galleries and antique shops abound in the
village, and almost every day an Italian farmers market can be found
in one of the towns bordering the lake. The Levantine valleys offer walks
along the rivers and forest hikes. The Ascona Lido offers protected day
bathing day in the lake, beautiful wild beaches and the rivers Maggia
and Verzasca for the more adventurous. © Bargain
