WALDSTÄTTERHOF
HOTELS
Lucerne Rail Station and Brunnen on Lake Lucerne
Not
to be confused, there are two hotels on Lake Lucerne named Waldstatterhof.
There is
also a cruise steamer Waldtstätter - and you can take
it from one to the other if so inclined. “Waldstätter” refers
to the three forest (wald) states (statter) which make up the original
forming of the Swiss Confederation Unterwalden, Schwyz and Uri, basically
the lands which surround Lake Lucerne and Lake Uri. Both the Waldstatterhof
Hotels offer bases for exploring the pleasures and beauties of the city
of Lucerne and the lake, both of them part of the Swiss Quality Hotel
Group.
Hotel Waldstätterhof Lucerne
The
Hotel Waldstätterhof of Lucerne is a
3 star accommodation in the city of Lucerne, located right next to
the main train station (head out the exit to the left of the platforms)
and a short walk across the central transportation plaza to the Lucerne
lake
cruise boat piers, perfect convenience for rail and lake steamer travelers
(see Wilhelm
Tell Express) The Lucerne Waldstatterhof is comprised of
joined historic residences built in 1890. The exterior presents the complex
beauty of Victorian era architecture while inside, the lobby,
rooms are sleek and post-modernist.
The
rooms mix the contemporary and the period nostalgia in a comfortable
blend. The restaurant on the ground floor
off the lobby is a bit unique as its alcohol free and vegetarian, complimenting
its clean and sharp design. Easily stroll
to the heart of historic Lucerne with its iconic Chapel Bridge, or
two blocks
to the Picasso collection at (see Rosengart
Collection).
Catch the bus for the ten minute ride to take the aerial cable car to
the top of Lucerne’s mountain (see Mt Pilatus), visit the Glaciergarten,
Bourbaki Panorama, or take a lake boat to the Swiss Transport Museum.

Seehotel Waldstätterhof - Brunnen
The
Seehotel
Waldstatterhof in Brunnen is a four star hotel, one of the
great Swiss
Riviera hotels
of the 19th Century when the likes of
Mark Twain would make the grand tour or Switzerland (see Mt
Rigi Railway).
Set right on the edge of Lake Lucerne and recently restored to recover
its turn-of-the-century glory, the Seehotel Waldstatterhof presents itself
as the first view of Brunnen from the deck of a lake steamer ship, a
grand and imperial symbol of the golden age. Brunnen has attracted the
visitors to its fairytale scenery for a couple of centuries.
Percy
Shelley and Mary Godwin found themselves out of money in Brunnen in 1814
(see Romantics
Tour by Rail Pass). In 1865, “Mad” King Ludwig
II of Germany, the one with the castles (see Neuschwanstein), fell in
love with Brunnen, and would visit with Richard Wagner (see Wagner
Museum Lucerne) in his “exile”. Goethe and the
man who made the legend of William Tell famous with his play, Frederick
Schiller both
got inspiration from lake and the surrounding mountains where the clouds
cling in haunting mists.
The
Seehotel Waldstatterhof is set in its own green park on the lakeshore, a short
walk to the
old town and just opposite the lake boat dock. The
train to Schwyz connects at Brunnen, with the station a 15 minute walk
through town or bus ride from the lake. The lake waters offer swimming
and sailing, while the surrounding hills offers biking and hiking, with
the “Swiss Trail” hiking route making a circuit around the
surrounding lake mountains, beginning from Brunnen. © Bargain
