BLACK FOREST HUT - GLASS BLOWING
Restaurant, Shop and Glass Museum in the Münstertal

Glass Blower at Black Forest Hut photoThe art of glass blowing has been a tradition in the Black Forest of Germany since the Romans marched up from the Rhine River valley through the thick woods of the southern mountains, The woods aren’t quite a black as they used to be, with significant swaths of the Beech, Fur and Spruce trees once so dense they gave the name to the region. Up a mountain road through the Munstertal, the Black Forest valley near Staufen im Briesgau, past the still active monastery of St Trudperts, where the road begins to twist and turn back on itself, tucked into a hairpin in the road is the Black Forest Hut Glass Blower House (Scharzwaldhutte Glasblaserhof), where the craft of shaping glass by hand is still a living art.

Glasbaserhof Black Forest photoThe Glasblaserhof is essentially a roadside restaurant and inn tourist stop with a glass blowing furnace demonstration area where the glass craftsmen using the traditional methods which go back for centuries can be watched at work as they spin molten blobs filled with air pressure into beautiful elaborate shapes, one of the few remaining traditional workshops of its kind in Germany. The shop takes up one portion of the old inn building with the restaurant/café in the other. The demonstrations are given in German, French and English on a rotating schedule. Before or after, visitors are encouraged to wander among the shop. The “museum” is a portion of the display with unique pieces, but mostly on display is the work produced by the glassblowers which can be purchased. There are a few inn rooms for overnight accommodation, but mostly for groups.

Getting to the Black Forest Hut

Glass Gifts at Glass Blower Hut photoThe Black Forest Glass Blower Hut is located on the L120/L123 Munstertaler Strasse, off the A5 Autobahn between Karlsrue and Basel, exit at Bad Krozingen and follow the road from Staufen in Breisgau, past the castle ruin on the hill, and past the monastery in the direction of the South Black Forest Nature Park (Sudschwarzwald Naturpark) . In good weather, especially in summer the road can get quite busy with cars and motorcycles attracted to the twisting road. Nearby is the Todtnauer Waterfall. The Glass Blower Hut is often included on tours of the area. © Bargain Travel Europe
