BLACK
FOREST WINE BARREL HOTEL
Sleep in a Wine Cask in the Wild Vineyards
There
are increasingly unique places to spend a romantic night. Sleep in
an igloo, a cave, a hay bed…why not in a wine cask? Many an
old monk has probably drifted off into the arms of Orpheus over his
oaken charge of aging vintage. On the sloping hillside vineyards of
the Baden Wine Trail through the hills of the Black Forest, an enterprising
family of local winemakers provides the opportunity to spend the night
among the vines, above the lovely little town of Sasbachwalden, with
a toast to the glorious sunset beyond the valley of the Rhine. The
farm of the family Wild is ancient. The farmhouse was built in 1665,
but it was in 1890 that the great-grandfather settled on the
land with his family, producing grapes as part of the Alde Gott wine
cooperative of Sasbachwalden and producing their own fruit brandies
and liqueurs. Three generations of Wilds live on the farm and open
the welcome mat to their curious version of a romantic one-of-a-kind
stay in a wine barrel.
Surrounded
by the vineyards and fruit trees, the 8000 liter former "Alde
Gott" wine barrels have been converted and lovingly
decorated into comfortable sleeping, living and sanitary quarters.
They began with four, but have expanded to eight separate accommodations, consisting of a bedroom barrel for two persons and a living room
barrel. The barrels rest at locations near the farmhouse, set to face stellar
views over the vines which breathtakingly reach to the Vosges Mountains
of France, flowing with the wild flowers of spring or colors of autumn. The
sleeping barrel experience is perhaps akin to a mobile home, but with views and a tasting menu.
The room barrels are heated for crisp nights, with cooling air flow
for summer provided by the glass view windows and doors opening to
the mountain slope breezes.
Romantic Stay with Wine
An overnight stay for 2 includes a welcome bottle of Alde Gott sparkling wine
and snack basket with two more wines, and a bottle of non-alcoholic
grape “Winzer”, 2 bottles of mineral water, bakery pastries
and sausages. Breakfast is included. The price for two starts at around €300,
including tax. Sleeping in the vineyards avoids having to worry about
drinking and driving, but should you want to venture out, the village
of Sasbachwalden offers a special dining package called Dinner
Jumping with a course each at your choice of four restaurants in the village
including the Michelin Star Restaurant Fallert at the Tahlmuhle Hotel (see Black Forest Jump Dining).
The village is surrounded by Schnapps farms for tasting as well as
the Alde Gott and Klostergut Schelzberg wineries of the Ortenau wine
region.
Black Forest Exploring
For further explorations, nearby are hiking trails, the historic Black
Forest resort town of Baden-Baden with its Roman Baths (see Baths
of Baden-Baden), and the amusements of the Europapark. On the western side
of the Black Forest, the wine trails of Alsace (see Wine
Road of Alsace)
and Strasbourg are within an easy day trip. The wine barrel hotel of
the Wild Farm is not hard to find. From the A5 autobahn between Karlsruhe
and Basel exit number 53 at Achern, follow the Black Forest High Road
through Sasbachwalden, after 2 kilometers, look for the bottle on a
stone and sign for the Wild Farm. © Bargain
