ROMANTIK HOTEL WILDEN MANN
Historic Traditional Hotel of Lucerne
The
Wilden Mann (Wild Man) is a symbol of Lucerne. A bearded giant with
a crown of leaves,
wielding an uprooted tree trunk in his upraised hand
symbolizing untamed strength, and resistance to constraints and convention.
He was the subject of the first painting on the renowned Chapel Bridge.
A local poem of medieval Lucerne tells the story of a giant skeleton
found beneath a toppled oak tree in the nearby village of Reiden which
locals attributed to the mythical wild man. He became to represent the
protector of the Coat of Arms of Lucerne painted with him on the bridge
panel. Depictions of the Wild Man can be found on the walls of the two
towers of Lucerne’s medieval battlements (see Musegg
Walls of Lucerne)
and also at The Wilden Mann Hotel and Restaurant, Lucerne’s historic
hotel.
Set in the heart of
the original old town, a block from the Chapel Bridge, sandwiched between
the Singer Haus in Munzgasse and the first coin mint
of Luzern, Zur Alten Munz, The Wilden Mann was first mentioned as a pub
tavern with rooms in 1517. Two buildings were combined in the 1700s from
the tavern and a neighboring washhouse and stables, with the hotel listed
in city records in 1860. The Wilden Mann Hotel and Restaurant now consists
of seven individual buildings joined together, forming a bit of a jumble
of halls and stairways with nooks and hideaways, adding to its old world
charm. The early Baroque exterior architecture has been lost, with the
façade of the main building restored to its 19th Century romantic
glory, sharing the Swiss-German name with the French version - Le Hotel
Sauvage - above the door.
The Wilden Mann has
two charming restaurants, the gourmet Wilde Mann Stube Restaurant upstairs,
designed in 1908 with marvelous alcoves of
miniatures of Lucerne as it was in the 1800s, reminiscent of a Hogarth
etching with a wine cellar of international wines. The more casual traditional
Burgerstube represents Swiss old world style with wooded wainscoting
richly decorated in varied hues, where the oak ceiling beams feature
illustrated coats of arms. The Wilden Mann is the traditional hotel of
the Lucerne Carnival season.
The Guild Masters of the Saffron’s
Guild first established in the 15th Century has made it their headquarters,
beginning the first march of the carnival from the hotel’s Le Salon
bar, where they first gather for a salutary drink. The Wilden Mann is
more in the luxury category with prices to match. The famous traditional
old hotel of Lucerne it has been host to a list of illustrious quests
over the years from Prince Rainier of Monaco and Leonard Bernstein to
Gert Frobe "Goldfinger".
The fifty rooms at the Romantik Wilden Mann hotel, furnished in antiques,
each with its own distinct character, range in size and shape due to
the age and design of the connected buildings, with none exactly the
same. The 4 Star hotel, part of the Romantik Hotels and Restaurants Group
is in the luxury category with prices to match, but a most convenient
location with a rich tradition and colorful charm of bygone days.
The Wilden Mann Hotel on Bahnhofstrasse, is five minutes walk from the train station, KKL Cultural Congress Center, and Lake Lucerne cruise dock, and 2 minutes from the Rosengart Van Gogh Collection Museum (see Rosengart Collection). © Bargain Travel Europe
