YORKSHIRE LAVENDER
These Glorious Summer Blooms of York
To
borrow from the bard, after all the glowering clouds have lowered upon
the house, it’s
summer and the lavender blooms in Yorkshire. The glorious fields of purple
flower blossoms spread across the rolling hillside. Wait, purple
isn’t the exact color… What description better fits? Oh, yes,
lavender! Described as Yorkshire’s best loved free attraction, set
in nearly 60 acres in the Howardian Hills area of North Yorkshire designated
an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Yorkshire Lavender farm provides visitors
with a stress reducing natural experience, making for relaxing day out in
the country. What better time to visit than mid-summer when the blooms are
in full throes of rich colors and the gardens are resplendent in nature’s
glory. And its free!
In 2011, Yorkshire Lavender was awarded as Visitor Attraction of the Year
in the Visit York Tourism Awards. More than just a flower farm, this attraction
boasts wonderful gardens of variety themes, a Lavender Maze, Mediterranean
Dry Garden, Sensory Garden, Purple Patch Garden, Stream Garden, The Wibbly
Wobbly Way, Bog Garden, Natural Wild Flower Grassland Meadow, probably Yorkshire’s
largest hillside Snakes and Ladders, Grass Pyramid, The Lynne Goodwill Memorial
Garden and Sculpture Park.
Yorkshire Lavender Gardens and Specialty Plant nursery boasts the largest
collection of lavender and herbs in the North of England. Hundreds of varieties
are on sale for visitors to buy along with the unique opportunity to meet
the growers in the nursery and collect both advice and top quality plants.
With the Thyme Festival coming up on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July, it
is surely time for a visit! Wait that should be ‘thyme’, tee
hee… The free weekend of festivities will explore Thyme through the
ages and will offer a fun way of discovering tips and advice on how to grow
your own herbs. You’ll even be able to sample some special thyme infused
recipes in the Tea Room.
