KNIGHTS OF WALES
Plantagenets Battle Once Again
The thrill of knights charging on horseback and the clash of clanging swords once again challenge the fortresses of South Wales’ mighty castles. Beginning in April and running through to December, Wales's most famous castles and medieval abbeys will present the dramatic backdrop for a gauntlet full of pageants, plays, chivalric battles and spectacular Illuminata light shows.
Easter Fight - Plantagenet Society
Commencing over Easter, visitors are in for a treat as the brave knights of the Plantagenet Medieval Society stage a league tournament in the historic castles of CHEPSTOW, CAERPHILLY and RAGLAN and in southern Wales over three days. Starting at Chepstow Castle on Saturday 23rd April, the brave knights prepare for the melee. Amidst the colorful waving banners and coats of arms, the public will be able to meet the knights as they prepare for battle and decide whom they will offer favor in the battle for supremacy. Then follow the knights to other challenges and cheer them on at Raglan Castle on Sunday 24th April and then to Caerphilly (see Caerphilly Castle) on Easter Monday 25th April where the overall champion will be decided in a fierce battle of clashing blades.
Siege of May - Caerphilly
In May, Caerphilly Castle will be once again under siege thanks to the Company of Chivalry and the Bowmen of the Rose on Sunday and Monday, the 1st and 2nd of May and again on Sunday and Monday the 29th and 30th. Here will be an opportunity to witness the firing of the amazing mighty siege engines, launching projectiles from the edge of the castle moat. Alongside the knights’ battles will be a Medieval Festival. Step into a Wales of the past so different from today where the common folk of land go about their daily lives, demonstrating the crafts of blacksmithing, leather working and woodcarving, wool weaving, and cooking a meal, or even just lounging about to play Nine Men's Morris.
October Illumination - Caerphilly
For eight days in the fall from Friday 30th September to Saturday October 8th , Caerphilly Castle will raise its portcullis again to the return of Illuminata in the inner ward at Wales's largest medieval castle. Thousands of visitors will witness the amazing brilliant color of a journey through centuries of love and hate, bitter conflict, woeful destruction of the struggles of the Plantagenet age as it played out over the fields and hills of south Wales in the middle ages. Audiences will be transported through centuries of conflict from Gilbert De Clare “Strongbow” to Llywelyn Bren through to Hugh Le Despenser and the hapless Edward II, before moving on to the ravages and devastation of the English Civil War and the castle's subsequent restoration at the hands of the Marquess of Bute.
