SEAVIEW
GUESTHOUSE - LAUGHARNE
Dylan Thomas House Guest Rooms & Restaurant
The
small coastal village of Laugharne on the Pembrokshire Coast of south
west Wales is closely associated
with the poet Dylan Thomas, mostly for
the cliffside house he owned in his later but all too short life known
as the boathouse (see Dylan
Thomas Touring), and for the inspirations
he took for his writings from the dramatic estuary shore of the River
Tâf and
the evocative ruins of the medieval castle which stands sentinel above
(see Laugharne
Castle), but the first house which
Thomas and his wife Caitlin inhabited is found on a little narrow lane
of the village, now
called the Seaview Guesthouse, were their son Llewelyn was born. The
poet first came to Laugharne in 1936, after publishing his first two
volumes of poetry, gaining notice in literary circles. He returned
again in 1938 with stay at the Sea View house. He only spent five months
in
the little historic three-story Georgian house, but later said it was
the happiest and most productive period of their lives. Dylan wrote
many
of the
pieces collected in his “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog” while
at the SeaView.
The Seaview Guesthouse describes itself as a restaurant with rooms,
though one might also refer to the more familiar idea of a bed & breakfast.
The views of the sea suggested by the name are from the guest rooms above,
where the climate of the coastal inlet and sea present a changing palate
of moods of the unpoiled seascape beyond the sash windows. The careful
restoration of the historic house features bedrooms which retain their
original character while still offering contemporary comfort and style.
The Dylans at Seaview Restaurant awarded AA 2 rosettes for its local
cuisine takes up much of the lower floor and the sun garden in the
front of the house behind the lane fence. The restaurant which focuses
on simple,
wholesome food is worth a stop whether one stays as a guest or just
passing through. The dining room offers original character of a time
gone by.
Dine in bar area with its terrace and enjoy a pot of tea, or try a
Welsh farmhouse cider. A traditional Welsh breakfast can set you for
a day
of exploring the wild wetlands or the beautiful surrounding Pembrokeshire
and Carmarthenshire countryside. While nearby Tenby can be crowded
with tourists, lovely Laugharne can seem a world away, wrapped in the
solitude
which inspired Wales best known poet. © Bargain
