HUNGERBURG FUNICULAR & NORDPARK CABLE CAR
Innsbruck’s Mountain Tram
There
are few places in the world where the urban landscape of a city and the majestic
peaks of a stunning mountain range are so close. This
unique value of Innsbruck has attracted two Winter Olympics to Innsbruck
and year round, the rugged mountain terrain of the Tyrolean Alps are
just a 20 minute ride, by funicular tram and aerial cable gondola from
the city center. For almost a century, a funicular system has trundled
passengers around the hills of Innsbruck and to the upper district of
Hungerburg. In 2007, the old system was reconstructed with a design so
architecturally stunning it has become a tourist attraction on its own.
With
stations looking like space craft from the future landing on mountain
slopes, designed by innovative architect Zaha Hadid (see Phaeno
Wolfsburg),
the track begins just around the corner from Innsbruck’s famed
Golden Roof and the Hofpalace, at the Congress Station where it traverses
the
rushing waters of the River Inn from which the city gets its name, then
climbs the mountain to the upper valley, there connecting to the Nordkette
Cable Car to continue upward to the Nordkette mountain sport and holiday
region. The Hungerburg Funicular of Innsbruck is special technical marvel
among this form of transport, with changing inclinations as it crosses
bridged, and moves underground before ascending.
The Nordkettebahn Cable Car carries the rest of the way to the upper
altitudes. Continuing ascent, the bustle of Tyrolean capital is replaced
with the peace and beauty of the nature, until all that is left is the
spectacular view of Innsbruck by day and shimmering lights by night.
At the high station at 2256 meters above sea level, visitors can view
the Inn valley on the one side and the vistas of pristine mountain slopes
and peaks on the other. A visit to the Nordkette offers combination of
relaxation, the wonder of nature, and modern architecture, and at the
top, hiking trails in summer and skiing in winter.
The Hungerburg Funicular can be taken on its own, with a stop for slice of strudel at the Nordkette station, before returning to the city, or continue on up to the mountains. Prices are based on distance traveled with the funicular alone about €6.80 for a round trip for adults, up to €24.30 to Seegrube. The Hungerburg Funicular stops at the Innsbruck Alpen Zoo with a combination ticket available for €10 adult, €8.50 Youth and Senior and €5/€2 Children, including Zoo entrance and free parking at the Congress City Garage, 8am to 6pm. © Bargain Travel Europe
