AU COEUR de MEGEVE HOTEL
The Heart of Megeve Resort Rhone Alps
Megève is one of the world’s premier ski resorts in winter but a best kept secret in summer. Nearby Albertville is a more familiar name from the Winter Olympics held in 1992, but this quiet and elegant village has been a destination for the international jet set since the Rothschilds came in 1910, building a vacation home on the slope of Mont d’Arbois as a French alternative to the Swiss St Moritz. In 1921, Baronne Noémie de Rothschild built a deluxe hotel which spurred the resort's development with an emphasis on French living style. Today, Megève is recognised as one of the most beautiful skiing villages in the world, which attracts a large majority of native visitors, as well as the internationally famous.
The Au Cœur de Megève Hotel lies right at the heart of the village in the pedestrian zone of the central Place Aallard where the Giazzi Family has welcomed guests to this cozy Alpine chalet style accommodation for three generations. The rooms of rustic wood and Scottish fabrics offer a warm charming atmosphere with views of the nearby church with its ancient priory, and the waters of the Nant des Cordes mountain stream which flow below the balconies. The hotel restaurants the Le Cœur and Le St Jean (in winter only) attract locals as well as visitors for the evocative traditional atmosphere. The street level terrace bar is ideal for watching the passing parade of people and the famous horse-drawn carriages which go up and down the plaza. You might even encounter a famous celebrity who has made Megeve an escape.
In the less pricey summer, a range of activities abound in the Alpine surroundings, from horse riding, tennis and golf, to rock climbing, paragliding and mountain biking. Or for a special treat take a scenic flight from the local airport for a close up look Eruope’s highest peak, Mont Blanc. The sports complex, the Palais des Sports offers swimming, a climbing wall and Olympic ice rink. Year round events contribute to the international flair of the village. The Horse and Sled festival (Fête du Cheval et du Traîneau) in keeping with the farming heritage has been a popular attraction for 50 years, and the International Jazz Festival brings jazz rhythms to the streets and bars of Megève in July. When snow blankets the valley, the Megève Polo Masters in January attracts the international polo circuit and the Snow Golf Cup is a unique golf tournament played on the snowy cloak of the mountain plateau golf course.
To get to Megève, the TGV Sud-Est station at Sallanches is 12 kilometers from the village with taxi or bus service. The nearest airport is Geneva, an hour by car, though a taxi ride is about 70 euro. Train service from Geneva is to Sallanches-Combloux-Megève station and takes about two and half hours, though actually faster by bus via La Roche-sur-Foron. © Bargain Travel Europe
