SCENIC FLIGHT OVER MONT BLANC
Aerocime from Megeve Altiport
Flying past jagged crags of stone dappled with clinging ice and swooping over the sparkling white blanket of glacier snow, looking out the window at the Alps highest mountain peak seeming also so close you could reach out the window and touch it. Flying across Europe in a commercial jet, you can occasionally look out the window to see the mighty Alps in the distance, but for a much, much closer look, the Aerocime scenic flight company offers one of the rare experiences of scenic flights in an airplane, departing from the unique mountain airport of the French alps resort town of Megeve. As a private pilot, I’ve had the occasion to sample some interesting runways and a few mountain flights but the Altiport at Megeve and the Valley Blanche stand out. The airport runway points right at the mountain in a box valley, but the downward slope allows take-offs and landings in one direction.
Flying in a single engine Jodel D140 “Musketeer” ideal for mountain flying, with room for three passengers and a panoramic glass canopy allowing for photos in every direction, the scenic flights offer an intimate encounter with some of Europe’s most stunning scenery. Each passenger has individual headphones to listen to the pilot’s commentary through the full flight. Flights are offered all year round, with skis on the plane in winter. You don’t fly over the mountains as the peaks are higher than the oxygen level, so the mountains rise up to greet you and leave you wondering if you could jump out and land in pile of snow, also perhaps contemplating if you should have brought a sandwich and survival gear.
Four different flight routes are offered. There is a short 10 minute fight over the Megeve Valley. The scenic Mont Blanc flights offered are: a 20 minute flight over the Chamonix Valley with views of the Bossons and Taconnaz Glaciers, 30 minutes over the Vallée Blanche, (white valley) with views of the Mer de Glace, Europe’s largest glacier (see Montenvers Rack Railway), and 40 minutes, including all the glaciers of the Mont Blanc range. Prices for the flights range from €66.00 per person for adults for the 20 minute route, €99 for the 30 minute flight and €132 for the longest. The most common is the half hour which takes you deep into the mountain valleys. A minimum of two are needed to fly, but individuals can be scheduled with others. Children are half-price. A discount price for three passengers flying together is offered online. As with all mountain activities, the flights are dependent on the weather and it’s best to reserve 24 to 48 hours in advance. Megeve is about a half hour drive from Chamonix and an hour from Geneva. © Bargain Travel Europe
