SKI CHAMONIX MONT BLANC
The Original French Alps Skiing Resort
Chamonix-Mont Blanc is the original high-altitude ski resort in the French Alps first discovered by English skiers at the turn of the last century. This fantastic and charming town in the shadow of Europe’s highest mountain is one of the European meccas for skiers and boarders with lively après ski, from Michelin star restaurants to night clubs, challenging skiing, and stunning scenery. The resort area of the Mont Blanc ski aregion provides some of the most challenging pistes in the French Alps making it an excellent choice for intermediate to expert skiers.
For beginners, the Les Planards and the Savoy area located at the foot of the Brevent offer a number of gentle bunny slopes within easy reach of Chamonix. For the intermediate skier the Chamonix Valley region provides 75 miles of varied slopes and runs, linked by bus service and all included with an area lift pass. There are a range of challenging blue and red runs at high altitude and glacier skiing on the Grands Montes Glacier with unrivaled snow. The Vallée Blanche descent, reached from the Aiguille du Midi cable viewpoint, is usually open all season, and one of the most inspiring launches in the Alps, skied with a guide, offering 12 miles of unforgettable skiing in jaw dropping scenery (see Aiguille Du Midi Mont Blanc Views). For the advanced and expert skier Chamonix is the undisputed champion of off-piste skiing in Europe. If you are unfamiliar with the area a local guide is essential. A recent avalanche has been much in the news of late.
If you prefer to fly as well and ski, Chamonix Mont Blanc is also the original spot in the Alps for paragliding with a number of schools and expert instructors. Paragliding carries on all year, weather dependent. There is also scenic airplane sightseeing flights of the Mont Blanc massif and Chamonix Valley from nearby Megeve airport (see Mont Blanc Scenic Flights). The sports center has an indoor pool with waterslides and ice skating, and don’t forget the Casino. Chamonix offers a range of hotels from the charming and intimate to high rise tower and 5 Star deluxe Albert 1er Chamonix.
Getting to Chamonix
Chamonix is reached by coach or car from Geneva (an hour and half), by the Mon Blanc Tunnel road from Italy (€35.10 one way), or by the scenic train Mont Blanc Express connection to the Swiss Alps resorts from Martigny. You can take the Eurostar snow train from St Pancras (see Eurostar), but discount air flight to Geneva is faster. The TGV fast train from Paris travels via Lyon to Chambéry with a connection to St. Gervais Les Bains Le Fayet 15 minutes from Chamonix (see TGV Rail Passes). If searching travel times from France on SBB or SNCF sites use this as your arrival station rather than Chamonix, if traveling from Switzerland by train via Mont Blanc Express use Chamonix Mont Blanc.
