Romantic Rhine River Historic Hotel
The Krone Assmannhausen Hotel has been welcoming visitors traveling along the Rhine River for 450 years, first opened as a travelers inn connected to a horse changing station in 1541. The current form of the hotel in romantic Rhine style dates from an 1893 embellishment evident in its beautiful half-wood construction of turrets and oriels, offering a tradition of luxury. Assmanhausen is a quaint small village suburb of Rüdesheim, on the eastern shore of the scenic Middle-Rhine, set amid the Rheingau wine vineyards clinging to the hillsides and flanked by the evocative romantic castles. This historic hotel which in its gloried past has hosted kings and movie stars offers a truly unique atmosphere with cozy antique furnished rooms, priceless paintings, oak-paneled restaurants, and marble floors. Views across the river frame the castle towers and parapets of Castle Rheinstein (see Castle Rhinestein Knights Watch).
All the rooms and suites of the Hotel Krone at Assmanhausen are individually designed with some rooms and suits offering fireplaces and individual sauna. The hotel restaurant offers a genuine experience for aficionados and gourmets with regional specialties and international offerings quite popular for stops along the river. The wine cellar features a depth of regional varietals. The hotel’s location makes for an ideal base for exploring the sights of the legendary middle Rhine, hiking or biking, or river cruising (see KD Rhine Cruises). Ride the chairlift up through the vineyards to the Jagdschloss Neiderwald or . After a day of castle climbing, wine tasting and listening for the song of the Loreley, return to the hotel and linger for a drink in the traditional “Hubertus Bar” of antler lined walls. Enjoy round of golf or take in a local wine festival (see Rudesheim Wine Museum). From March to October, swim in the heated outdoor pool. During summer, concerts and theater performances are held in the village.
The Hotel Krone Assmanhausen is listed as a 5-Star hotel but prices are more in line with four star for its rural location, comfortably removed from a major city. It’s about a half hour by car to Wiesbaden and 45 minutes from Mainz. The secluded location in the little riverside cubby sets it apart from the bustling modern world, though perhaps its best to choose a slightly higher priced river facing room as the railroad tracks pass behind the hotel, making the vineyard facing rooms, while offering lovely views of the vines, just a bit noisier, though part of the nature of older accommodations along the Rhine.
