MOZART DINNER CONCERT – SALZBURG
A Little Night Music Baroque Style
What better to do in Salzburg of an evening than sit down to a dinner with Mozart in a Baroque dining hall, and a little chat with Constanza by candlelight. Yes, the Mozarts are long gone, but the music lives on. After a tour through the birth house of the famous composer (see Mozart House Salzburg) and maybe a visit to the family gravesite (see St Sebastien Cemetery) why not experience the opera music of the composer in one of the oldest restaurants in Europe where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his family dined during his time in the city.
The Mozart Dinner Concert has been a fixture in Salzburg since 1996. A four course meal of a menu prepared according to historic recipes of roasted capon and rosemary quark dumpling which date back to the composer’s time of the 18th Century, served by candlelight in the Baroque Hall (Barocksaal) of the historic Stiftskeller St Peter, the restaurant of the St Peter’s Monastery, first mentioned as a dining spot in the year 803 during a visit by the emperor Charlemagne (see Charlemagne Aachen). Before and between each course, a costumed quartet and a pair of singers, the Amadeus Consort, perform arias and duets from Mozart’s operas, from the Magic Flute, Figaro and Don Giovanni. The performers sing amidst the dining tables and are not averse to a little personal interaction or a bit of modern interpretation while in 18th Century costumes for entertainment.
After visiting ornate palace chambers at the newly opened Prince-Archbishops Residence of the Dom Quartier (see Dom Quartier Salzburg) (virtually next door), having the opportunity to sit in a dining chamber of the opulent age and listen to chamber music in a chamber where it might have been originally heard is both a little touristy, and a real a treat! Audience cheers in the intimate environment to Mozart’s “greatest hits” shows he’s still the crowd pleaser after 300 years. Mozart’s C-Minor-Mass was first heard at the St Peter Monastery in 1789.
