WEINHAUS WEILER HOTEL RESTAURANT - OBERWESEL
World Heritage Menu on the Middle Rhine
Oberwesel has been called the "Town of Towers" on the Rhine for its sixteen towers on the medieval defensive wall, and its two imposing churches, the Martin’s Church and the distinctive red of the Church of Our Lady, all watched over by the silhouette of the Castle Schoenburg standing above on the hillside surrounded by wine vineyards. This romantic jewel of a town is set in the heart of the region of Middle Rhine just beyond the river curve of the legendary Loreley stone escarpment. On a recent journey along the Rhine of Germany, to explore the castles and vineyards which line the shores of the mighty river designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its fairytale landscapes and romantic fortresses, I had occasion to stop in the historic village of Oberwesel for a stay at the Hotel Restaurant Weinhaus Weiler, a bed & breakfast style inn run by the Weiler family for four generations.
The Weinhaus Weiler Restaurant and Hotel is located in the center of the village next to the town hall and market place and directly across from the Rhine, separated by the raised rail tracks which run along the river just next to the medieval stone wall which separates the town of Oberwesel from the river plain. Klaus and Trudy Weiler are the fourth generation of the family to operate the hotel, offering a warm and welcoming hospitality. The centuries old building of charming gingerbread half-timbered architecture is what one might expect of the medieval village - and what compliments exploring a world heritage historical destination more than a World Heritage meal?
To compliment a touring visit to the area, the Weinhaus Wieler Restaurant offers a thematic World Heritage Menu for its guests or others who find their way to Oberwesel. While the menu is not particularly historic, the dinner is a delicious three course culinary story told with the traditional dishes of the Rhine River region, prepared with panache from Klaus’ kitchen and served in the romantic old world atmosphere of the wood beamed restaurant of the inn, aided by a selection of regional wines from the cellar. Weinhaus after all means "Wine House".
The ten guest rooms and suites at Hotel Restaurant Weinhaus Weiler are individually situated and named for their signature features, like the Burgblick, which looks out on the fairytale Schönburg Castle on the hillside, or the Vogelsang for the singing birds outside the windows of greenery. Each room is beautifully decorated in a romantic country style. A breakfast buffet is provided each morning with the guest’s name already set out in anticipation, before a day of exploring the beautiful surroundings of Oberwesel, hiking the hills, exploring vineyards, or castle hunting.
For a private wine tasting, the Weilers will arrange for a visit to the cellars of their local wine provider the Lanius-Knab Vineyards (see Wine Tasting Lanius Knab Vineyards) whose historic wine cave is a few blocks away, for a personal look at the historical traditions and modern wine making along the Rhine, or even a medieval wine performance show. Or take a short stroll to the Rhine dock for a cruise along the might Rhine River through the canyon of castles. (see Rhine River KD Cruise Line). © Bargain
