DIAVOLEZZA CABLE CAR
Berghaus Diavolezza - Skiing, Barbeque and Jacuzzi

Diavolezza Cable Car Bernina PassIn the high Alps mountain peaks of the Engadine in Switzerland, a legend tells of the Red Headed She Devil, a beautiful nymph who lived among the chamois mountain goats of the eternal ice and snow. Young hunters from the valley who lingered too long into the dark attracted by her beauty and her seductive call on the winds might never to be seen again, likely falling into the crevasses of the glacier. Such was the fate of one young hunter named Aratsch, who went in search of the deadly beauty, never to return, with the plaintive voice on the wind calling out “Aratsch is dead”. The glacier in the mountains of the Bernina Pass bears the name of his icy tomb Morteratsch and a mountain the name of the legendary “she devil”, La Diavolezza.

Lounging at Diavolezza Berghaus TerraceThe Diavolezza mountain peak is found in the Bernina Pass between St Moritz and Postchiavo of the Graubunden region of southeast Switzerland. With its distinctive cable car cabins of blue and yellow the cableway rises from the station along the route of the Bernina Pass rail route of the Rheatian Railway (see Bernina Express) and the highest mountain highway pass between Switzerland and Italy (see Driving Bernina Pass). The aerial cable car to Diavolezza came later than others in the Swiss Alps, with the idea for a funicular railway first proposed in the 1937, but not until 1956 was a cable car to the mountain of the she devil and its access to the skiing of the glacial ice realized. The cableway of Diavolezza was completely modernized in 2011.

Berghaus Diavolezza Sun TerraceAt the top of the Diavolezza cable tram ithe Berghaus Diavolezza hotel and restaurant. Where other cable viewing stations tend to look down, the terrace of the Diavolezza looks out on snow cloaked mountain crags spread out like a stunning backyard view. Relax with a drink in the snow lounges of the terrace restaurant with a beer or Italian wine before the vista of the Diavolezza mountain and the Bernina massif ridge, or taste the traditional Swiss mountain dish of Rösti with a group of new friends from the terrace restaurant or indoor buffet.

Rosti at Berghaus DiavolezzaIn winter, the main attraction is skiing on the Morteratsch Glacier and its challenging 10 kilometer runs down to the Morteratsch Glacier to the Morteratsche rail station in the valley and a return trip, or the connected ski lift tram to the Lagalb on the other side of the valley in the joined Diavolezza-Lagalb ski area, known for its red and black difficult ski and boarding pistes with snow lasting well into the spring. In Summer, enjoy the crisp alpine views with a glass of Champagne in the highest altitude Jacuzzi in the Swiss Alps at 10,000 feet on the sun deck, r take a guided hike along the Morteratsche Glacier down a thousand meters in elevation to the valley rail station, with close up views of the amazing natural scenery and the glacial crevasses which spelled the doom of the legendary young hunter for which it is named. Depending on the weather you hike up a hundred yards to the highest barbeque pit in the Alps at Sass Queder to cook your own spareribs or sausages supplied from the Berghaus restaurant pantry.

Double Room Accommodation at Berhas DiavolezzaThe hotel of the Berghaus Diavolezza offers both inexpensive dormitory style accommodation for the young casual hiker or skier or for more privacy or longer stay, cozy and modern no-fuss double and single hotel rooms with stunning views of the snow-capped peaks beyond ice sickled windows.
