SAXONY CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS 2017-2017
Germany’s No. 1 Arts and Music Destination
*Archived
Saxony is the eastern district of Germany roughly between Berlin and Dresden. For years this region was part of the socialist state and its art and culture rather lost to the west, but since the re-unification has come roaring back as one of the country’s top destinations for art and culture. This is the land were Bach and Mendelssohn came from, Wagner, Goethe and Martin Luther, and the glories of the Baroque age of the Saxony Electors. Here are some of the highlights for the coming seasons of 2017 and 2017.
2017 marks the Booth anniversary of Dresden's famous Holy Cross Boys Choir (Kreuzchor). It will be celebrated all year long, but a special festival week is held from April 15-24. At the end of the year, the Dresden State Operetta, Germany's only theater dedicated solely to light opera and musicals, will move into its spectacular new renovated home in the city center which combines buildings from an old power station with contemporary architecture.
In Europe, only Vienna can rival the music history written in Leipzig, which can be best experienced along the Leipzig Music Trail. Famous music ensembles like the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the St Thomas Boys Choir keep adding to this legacy. Many annual festivals, like the Leipzig Bach Festival (see Bach Museum), the Richard Wagner Days (see Young Wagner) , the Mendelssohn Festival (see Mendelssohn House) and the Schumann Festival Week provide for great musical experiences. In 2017, there will be another festival dedicated to the composer Max Reger on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary centenary of his death.
Leipzig's own artist Yadegar Asisi has prepared a new exhibition for his "Panometer", where the world's largest panorama image will be on display. The word "Panometer" stands for "panorama gasometer", since Asisi uses old gas containers for his art displays in Saxony. His newest creation is none less than the "Titanic". Meanwhile, the Dresden Panometer will show the destruction of the Dresden in 1945 (see Dresden Frauenkirch) in the winter months and the Baroque splendor of the city for the rest of the year, and the same is planned for 2017.
The Dresden State Art Collections are among the best museums in the world and the ongoing reconstruction of Dresden's former royal palace (see Dresden Museums) continues to opens new spaces for permanent exhibitions. In 2017, "The Image and the Knowledge of the World around 1600" will add new rooms filled with amazing objects from the Renaissance times not represented before, like tools, games and music instruments. And in 2017, more rooms will be added, with impressive armors and weapons as well as fine attires and dresses on display. Not incidentally, this covers the times of Martin Luther, the great reformer. Since Saxony is the "Motherland of Reformation", it's no surprisethe Dresden State Art Collections maintain the largest collection of items from the Reformation. © Bargain Travel Europe
