KLOSTER HOTEL LUDWIG VON BAYER - ETTAL
The Abbey Ettal Hotel in Ammergau Alps Bavaria
A fellow named Ludwig from Bavaria founded a Benedictine Monastery in the Ammergau Alps in 1330. The monastery at Ettal prospered over time and still houses up to fifty Benedictine Monks and operates a boarding school. The village of Ettal is about 40 minutes south of Munich by the autobahn and is on the route to the King Ludwig II’s palaces of Linderhof (see Schloss Linderhof and Grotto) and Neuschwanstein (Fairy Tale Castle Neuschanstein , but don’t be confused, the cleric and the king are different Ludwigs. What they do have in common is the magnificent Baroque architecture of the Ettal Abbey with its imposing domed Rococo Basilica (see Ettal Abbey Baroque).
Just as in centuries past, pilgrims and other visitors to the monastery need accommodation and the Kloster Hotel Ludwig von Bayer is located just across the main road from the Ettal Basilica on property owned by the monastery but for the vacation and holiday traveler in very non-monastic style. The hotel started out in the 14th Century as a tavern inn for weary pilgrims and traders making their way over the alps passes between Munich and Salzburg to rest and enjoy the monastery’s own kloster brewed beer, but expanded into a modern destination hotel. The rooms are cozy and decorated with a Bavarian flavor, with larger suites and full apartments for families. The monastery has its own bakery for fresh pastries and breads to go with the menu of the Braustueberl restaurant, which retains the rustic atmosphere of the original Bavarian tavern.
The Ludwig von Bayer Hotel in Ettal makes for a convenient base to explore the Ammergauer Alps, lying in a long valley surrounded by beautiful alpine lakes, and the breathtaking mountains peaks. The hotel facilities include: tennis court, spa and fitness center, Jacuzzi hot tub, a year round indoor pool and a playground. Rent bicycles for cycling the hills with able hiking trails, and skiing in winter. The Zugspitze peak, the highest in Germany in the Wetterstein Alps, the Mad Ludwig royal castles, and Oberammergau famous for its ten year Passion Play are all within easy reach. An alpine golf course is two miles away and the largest natural forest preserve in the German Alps is all around. Ettal is just a few minutes off the main autobahn for quick trips to more distant sights in southern Germany and Austria. © Bargain Travel Europe
