SEEWIRT AT THUMSEE RESTAURANT
Alpine Lake Retreat of Sigmund Freud in Berchtesgadenland
Relax, relax, you’re getting… Where would the famous mind behind cures for mental ill and proponent of hypnosis go to relax? Well, at the turn of the Twentieth Century, Dr. Sigmund Freud and his family would depart his office in Vienna (see Freud Museum Vienna) )and head to the Alpine mountains of Berchtesgadener Land of Bavaria, in the knob of land where Germany and Austria hook together like a puzzle piece.
Driving from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden then back into Austria I came across a shimmering little lake amid the pine forests, with a century old house turned restaurant at the lapping shore. The Thumsee, near the town of Bad Reichenhall and a stone’s through from the notorious Eagle’s Lair Hitler vacation home at Berchtesgaden, is a crystal clear idyllic mountain lake recreation area with summer swimming and hiking in the lush forested mountains.
The Seewirt Thumsee is a restaurant on the lakeshore, rebuilt and restored from an old inn where Dr. Freud visited with his family in 1901 to fish with his son and relax from his mind games on the crisp alpine air. The beer garden and terrace afford relaxing views of the lake for the weary traveler from afar. In my case one of the mountain routes was closed and I had to turn my rental car around and retrace my route, otherwise I might not have stumbled on the Thumsee.
The Seewirt Restaurant was the dream of local developer Thomas Schmid, who had visited the spot since childhood when his great-uncle was the proprietor. The house which now hosts the restaurant was originally built in 1873 as a residential villa, and served as a guest lodge for much of its life. The reconstruction was a challenge encountering delays and even a fire, but has been well worth the effort.
The lakeside restaurant is picturesquely situated with a bright dining room with cozy wooden furniture harkening back to the old times with a grand staircase with wrought iron railings to the terrace for the outdoor air and lake views when the weather is good. Stop in after a hike or a swim in summer, or just on a drive through the Bavarian alps. The hike around the lake trail popular with joggers and Alpine walkers is only 2.7 kilometers (about a mile and a half), with longer trails into the mountains. Along the trail is Germany’s oldest lily flower Nature Reserve at the outlet of the lake.

The restaurant is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 10pm. The Thumsee is a few minutes from the Bavarian alpine town of Bad Reichenhall, about 30 minutes from Salzburg and 20 minutes from Berchtesgaden. © Bargain
