Hiking “Candle Hotel” in the Valley of Waterfalls
Feeling the need to escape from it all and hike to some high mountain scenery and a lifestyle away from electricity? Enjoy a holiday amidst nature, wildlife and the mountains of the Jungfrau region. A Swiss style chalet hotel at a working dairy farm, the Mountain Hotel Obersteinberg is perched on an Alpine mountainside at 6,000 feet (1800) only open for guests from June 1 to September 30. It can only be reached on foot, with a 2 ½ hour hike from Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen Valley of the Waterfalls, or for a longer route 4 hours from the village of Mürren.
At the restaurant of the hotel cooking is done by open fire and the when the sun goes down, the rooms are lit by candlelight and gas lamp. When the sun comes up again, pack a picnic to enjoy among the high meadows and views of the valley surrounded by high snow-capped peaks or hike about an hour to the clear mountain lake of the Oberhornsee for a refreshing dip in Alpine waters. Stechelberg is reached by Postbus from the Lauterbrunnen rail station with connections to Wengen, Grindelwald and Interlaken. The trail starts by the Stechelberg Hotel.
