FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR
Largest Book Trade Event an October Tradition in Germany
The Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse) is the largest and oldest trade fair for books in the world, with almost 300,000 attendees expected to walk floor of the convention center (Messe) in 2020. It is also one of the most important events on the publishing trade calendar for launching new books and negotiating international sale of rights and licences of the printed word, and now multimedia and audio publishing as well. Publishers, agents, authors, booksellers, librarians, as well as film producers looking for the next movie subject participate to take the pulse of the book business. The first three days of the mid-October event is restricted to the trade, but two days on the weekend are open to public to peruse the aisles and booths of books upon books.
Frankfurter Buchmesse
The Frankfurter Buchmess has been a tradition in this city on the River Main for more than 500 years. In 1454, shortly after Johannes Gutenberg begin his innovation of movable type in his shop in nearby Mainz (see Gutenberg Museum Mainz) the first book fair was held by local booksellers, where even before the printing of books, the trade fair in Frankfurt’s old market square was a popular place for the selling of hand illustrated manuscripts. During the religious Reformation the market stalls were perused by scholars looking for newly available works to support the ideas of Martin Luther (see Luther Steps) and the spreading faith.
The Frankfurt Messe is a large complex of dedicated buildings and halls, about two rail stops from the main rail station in the direction of Wiesbaden, so if you can’t get a hotel near the center, transportation is quite convenient. With masses of visitors attending rooms can be a challenge without a lot of advance planning.
For the 2020 Frankfurter Buchmesse, I will have a first book launching, so check out the Combined Book Exhibit and look for it Aces: A Novel.
